The Lucky Ones.
Ilham Mahdi al Assi, raped to her death,
Drugged up on pills and tied to a marital bed
Guess they were wrong when they said ‘Mummy knows best’
Too young to drive, but they placed her in a carriage
Aged 13, trapped in a loveless marriage.
Sounds outrageous right? But there you have it,
We’re the lucky ones.
My mother, slave to her country and now a slave to me,
Washing in the basket, piled up dirty dishes in the sink
Ignorant of her history because she purposely kept it from me
Escaped from Uganda, if only I had known,
Forget the sofa, I’d sit her on a throne
Sounds selfish right? Believe me I know,
We’re the lucky ones.
Labels belong in the supermarket, stuck to the side of tins
We’re all people, with hearts that beat within
No one should have to apologise for the colour of their skin
The media amplifies the lies, it buries the truth,
But the hard facts remain, the murder of a black youth
Sounds immoral right? It’s downright uncouth,
We’re the lucky ones.
They didn’t let her see the scan, but she ceases to care
Worried about next week’s party - what on earth will she wear?
At 12 weeks pregnant, its tiny fingernails appear
Meanwhile, an unlucky couple desperately tries and tries
He retreats to work, while she sits at home and cries
Sounds unjust right? You can see it in her red raw eyes,
We’re the lucky ones.
Baby P, P for protected?
Too late now - the neighbours never suspected
No remorse for the tiny brain they affected
Barely able to walk or talk at 17 months old,
How could they expect him to pick up the phone?
Sounds stupid right? Everything seemed wrong,
We’re the lucky ones.
Everyday things taken for granted,
We think we know, but our vision is slanted,
We think, but let’s face it; the thoughts are planted,
Walk into Subway, with such ease - ‘Extra cheese?’ Yes please.
My father never tasted it until he was 23.
Sounds funny right? But although I tease,
We’re the lucky ones.
We feel sorry for those whose lives were interrupted
But we’re the ones still living in a world that’s corrupted
Too cowardly to stand up and say we stopped it
Standing on my own two feet, I look up to the sky
They’re in a better place now because we didn’t set the bar very high,
Sounds sad right? It’s about time we realise,
They’re the lucky ones.
