The challenge word was loss.
No spoilers.
If he closes his eyes and concentrates very, very hard he can almost grasp it. It was frustrating to have the essential, definitive and yet elusive something forever just beyond his grasp. He doesn’t know what the elusive something is, just that he feels a sense of loss and regret for not having it.
John sits with Rodney as he does every afternoon, barring missions or ugly surprises. He watches as once intelligent eyes track aimlessly around the room, comprehending nothing. Sometimes, if he closes his eyes and concentrates very hard he can pretend that none of this ever happened.
