So I've got this idea for a fic. You know that classic Alan Moore story, "For The Man Who Has Everything"? I want to do something like that, but with Superboy.
In the original story, Superman is exposed to a plant called the Black Mercy, which traps him in his greatest fantasy: Krypton was never destroyed, and he grew up on Krypton knowing his family, getting married, having a child, etc. But what would Kon-El have as his greatest fantasy? For this fic at least, he wants to have a normal non-superheroic life, like most everyone else he knows. There are no superheroes, no supervillains, no superpowers.
He's Conner Kent, cousin once or twice removed from famous Metropolis reporter Clark Kent. Conner lives in Smallville with Clark's parents, who are Conner's aunt and uncle. (Jonathan Kent did have a brother in canon, but he was killed in a farming accident long ago, according to that "afterlife" issue of the Death of Superman arc. So there might be some wiggle room for canon.)
Conner goes to high school with many counterparts from Kon's life. (Note the separation between Kon and Conner.) Kon did go to high school a little while he was in Hawaii (but was kicked out when a supervillain fight trashed the school), but some elements of TV high schools, like a school with a large student body only having a few teachers, will remain. Since this is a fantasy, Tana Moon will still be alive, and the school's journalism teacher; Conner has a huge crush on her.
I'm thinking of throwing a version of Smallville!Lex in there, because hey, it's Michael Rosenbaum. Let's say it's Alexander Luthor, Jr. Alex has a similar friendship with Conner like early Smallville's Lex-Clark relationship. Except without the superpowers and (some of) the slash. Lex Luthor Sr. will be around very little. The Kent's aren't too fond of Lex, but they like Alex a lot. Alex doesn't go to school with Conner, though they are of similar ages; he gets tutored at home. He lives in Smallville rather than in Metropolis because Lex wants him out of the way for several reasons; to keep from interfering in business, to keep him out of the public spotlight, and to keep him out of mind of Lex's enemies.
Like in "For The Man Who Has Everything," attempts to remove the Black Mercy from Kon has negative consequences to Conner's life. One idea was that Conner was driving and got into an argument with his friend, the passenger, and got into an accident that killed the friend. Conner also begins spotting inconsistencies with his "life," like the dead friend suddenly showing up again weeks later, and no one but Conner remembers anything bad having happened. The friend just had to go out of town for a while or something.
Well, that's the idea. I want to expand this some more, but I'd like feedback on it.
