Someone requested the first meeting of pre-Crisis Superboy and Supergirl, in connection to the Legion. I don't have that, but I bring the next best thing: the first time pre-Crisis Supergirl met post-Crisis Supergirl and Superboy! (It's kinda big, so there are dial-up links at the bottom f you need them.)
So Linda Danvers, aka Supergirl, just got home to Leesburg after a long roadtrip. She narrowly diverts a strange rocket heading for a park filled with people.
This nest bit is supposed to be a sideways two-page spread. If it looks wonky, try these
direct links.
Then Johnny Reb, one of Linda's villains, shows up gunning for Linda. He attacks Kara as well, just because she's there. Of course, Kara's a Kryptonian and her powers have already kicked in, so she's fine.
Whoops. Don't you just hate it when you forget to turn off your powers?
Way to go, Linda, you made the newly-arrived adorable alien girl cry!
This is apparently the next issue, which begins in medias res--or is it technically after the action? Anyway, look, it's Kon! Also, those are my favorite of all the Superboy and Supergirl costumes.
I like Kon's "Be glad you had parents" comment with the grin. Not sure why, exactly. Oh, and that's Dr. Kitty Faulkner, aka Rampage. She's sort of DC's She-Hulk.
The flirting! It's so cute! And notice that they don't seem to care that they're kinda-sorta related. "Kinda-sorta," because Kon was still a clone of Paul Westfield at this point; and even if he's half-Superman, does it count if Kara's from an alternate universe?
Jumping ahead a bit, Kara hears screaming going on in Metropolis and flies over to help. I think this is during the time the B13 future-virus had "upgraded" Metropolis, which explains the similarity to Kryptonian architecture Kara's familiar with.
Silly Plastic Man cosplayer, you wore pants! Are you not man enough to show off your legs?
Anyway, Metropolis is having a parade, and Mxyzptlk decided to stir up trouble by giving the Superman lookalike real powers and unleashing dinosaurs. It's apparently covered in Man of Steel #132. He doesn't like Kara's interruption, so he sends a pterodactyl after her. Kon and Linda finally arrive, whereupon Linda zaps Mxyzptlk. (Man, that's hard to type.)
Kon mentioned his tactile telekinesis power, so take a shot. And that caption is wrong, it was Young Justice #3. It's the one with the creepy pedophile Mxy cover.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, where did Mxy get a Sentinel?! And I know it's mean, but I want an icon of Kon on the bottom of the robot's boot. Anyway, the magic 'dactyl has Kara in its jaws, so Linda goes to the rescue. Kara falls, but Linda catches her just in time... for a triceratops to ram into Linda.
I mostly posted that page because of the middle panel, with all the Supergirl fangirls. I'm reminded of the JLU episode "Chaos at Earth's Core." Too bad Stargirl isn't around to get jealous.
Another tactile telekinesis mention, so take another shot. Oh, and that bouncing head? Heads toward an old lady crossing the street. Kara was in the nearby alley recovering from the magical attack, but went to save the old lady. She's to weak to save herself from being crushed, but just then...
Okay, while that seems pretty dickish, Superman doesn't know Kara has superpowers. He just thought she was some obsessed fan who wanted to carry out a fantasy of helping Superman. (He's had some bad experience with crazy fangirls, such as Dana Dearden.) And that's still not as dickish as pre-Crisis Superman.
I just want to hug Kara and feed her cookies and tell her everything is going to be okay. ;_;
(I wonder if this is where the writers for Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes got the idea for the other Kara Zor-El thinking everything after she went to sleep in the spaceship was a bad dream.)
...Was anyone else getting femslashy vibes off the two of them?
Anyways, that's how Linda and Kon met pre-Crisis Kara. Unfortunatenly, Kara had to be returned to the pre-Crisis universe, and the book was cancelled, with Linda going into limbo. Writer Peter David later said that if Supergirl had been allowed to continue, Power Girl would have joined and the book would have been a Birds of Prey-style "Blonde Justice" team.
Superman eventually did formally meet Kara and learn she was Kryptonian in Superman versus Doomsday: Apocalypse Now. She helped the rest of the Super-family rescue Steel from Apocalypse.
Oh yeah, and I wanted to
link this wonderful fic by
fashi0n-mistake. It's set after Kara had to go back, and Kon remembers her. Don't read if you have to go somewhere important, like work or to class, because I guarantee you will cry your eyes out.
EDIT: Links are fixed now, sorry about that!
