COMIC CON: DAY 2
Getting around in the convention centre is not unlike fighting your way through a zombie horde, without the benefit of a shotgun to make a hole now and then. The first day gave me a good sense of what I was up against, so I made sure to get there early to line up for my first panel: Coraline.
It's never too early in the morning to see some awesome costumes.
Coraline was a great movie and all, but I went to the panel pretty much for the sole purpose of seeing Neil Gaiman.
I kept my fangirling in check most of the time I was at the con, but just so you know... HOLY CRAP, I SAW NEIL GAIMAN. SRSLY, YOU GUYS. NEIL FREAKING GAIMAN.
Teri Hatcher and Keith David were there too.
Teri Hatcher laughs a lot.
Neil Gaiman does this a lot.
I didn't get a good picture of Travis Knight (one of the model makers), but he had the best line in the whole panel about working on the movie: "We're a bunch of oddball nomadic mole people who play with dolls for a living."
I would have loved to see a Graveyard Book panel - maybe next year? - but it was great to see so many talented people in one room. Especially when one of them is a writer as magical as Neil Gaiman.
Down to the exhibit hall after the panel. You're never far from a good costume.
Or something hilariously geeky. Like Star Trek themed perfume and cologne. (Also available: Pon Farr perfume and KHAAANN! cologne.)
ibroketuesday and
cookie_simone were having lunch with
levitatethis and
greyelveneyes, so I went to join them. After Tuesday and Cookie went off to a panel, I ended up hanging out and chatting with
levitatethis and
greyelveneyes for most of the afternoon. And at one point, getting interviewed by one of the many press people roaming around. ("Did you go to the Twilight preview?" AHAHAHAHAHA NO.)
After parting ways with
levitatethis and
greyelveneyes, I ended up at the Marvel booth just in time to catch the costume contest. There were people lined up around the booth for signings, so I could barely see anything on the stage, but I managed a few pictures of the costumes. The Red Skull and WWI Captain America were really good.
The third place winner...a Stan Lee costume! The guy was in character the whole time. He even did the voice. "This is the greatest honour I've received since I created everything here. Excelsior!" The female Loki on the right won first place.
Black Widow, Nick Fury, and......I have no clue what the guy on the right is supposed to be, but I'm a little scared.
Dazzler in her element.
After getting so many awesome sketches from the webcomic guys the day before, I decided to head up to the little spot on the map labelled "Artist Alley". And MAN, I only wish I'd found it sooner. It's a whole chunk of con territory for professional and semi-professional artists to show off their work. Most of them were taking commissions for sketches, from quick freebies to $100 professional drawings. And I had a whole sketchbook waiting to be filled up. That would have to wait until later, though, because it was time to head off for my evening panel: Rifftrax.
There must have been a lot of panels going on that evening. Just getting to the lineup was an epic struggle in itself. Good first sign inside the panel room: a Torgo costume. There must have been motion-sensitive speakers in his knees or something, because
THE MUSIC was playing whenever he was walking around.
Also showing up, part of the Venture Brothers costume group: Baron Ünderbheit and Sergent Hatred.
The Rifftrax maestros: Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin MacDonald.
The Rifftrax panel was different from most of the others I went to. It opened with a
trailer of clips from various movies they've riffed. Then they did a live riffing for the crowd, on
a short about construction site safety . It's hilarious to see the guys get really into it when they start flailing around and acting out some of their riff lines. After the short, instead of a Q&A, they opened the floor up to audience suggestions for future movies to riff. There were some good suggestions (Showdown in Little Tokyo MUST be done at some point), but in the end, the "winner" was
Dragon Wars. Fun times.
That was about it for Friday. I headed off into the Gaslamp Quarter, had dinner at an Indian restaurant, and walked back to my hotel to crash. I wouldn't be sleeping the next night, so I needed every bit I could get...
