Blah
Three unrelated thoughts. That's what I get for not updating for ages.
1. It's getting into that depressing time of year when the school year is ending, which means I have to make a lot of goodbye speeches to the third-year students who are going to high school (four schools' worth of them), and prepare for the possibility that some of the teachers I like will be forced to move to different schools next month. Last year, practically the entire Board of Education office was replaced with new people, and a few of the schools too, so you have to assume that every parting could be a final goodbye.
I've managed to keep it together so far. The most emotional I got was probably when the kids at one school were giving me little goodbye messages they'd written, but I haven't cried yet. There's another few weeks of it ahead, though, so it's probably only a matter of time.
2. Last weekend I went to the house of one of the BoE office ladies for dinner. She's the same age as me, and she's been super friendly to me this year, so it was a nice evening hanging out with her and her family (including two of her younger cousins, who happened to be my students). Well, mostly nice. She has two dogs, and while one of them (May) was the sweetest, best-tempered dog you could hope to meet, the other dog (Puta) was... Well, the rule about tiny dogs being more aggressive is definitely true for him.
Still, it was a fun evening. Her mom made tempura, some kind of fried pancake-like things whose name I can't remember, and her dad whipped up some onigiri when I mentioned that I liked them. So it was a nice, laid-back evening with my trying to get by with the little Japanese I know, Office Lady and her family trying the little English they knew, me getting out my DS dictionary programme when we ran into a roadblock of a language barrier, and some weird Japanese game shows on in the background. Good times.
3. Seems like EVERYTHING is on hiatus right now. Supernatural doesn't have new episodes for a few weeks. Mythbusters and Fringe probably won't be back until April. Torchwood is coming along with that five-part mini-season eventually, but I'm not sure when. No new House next week, either. Looks like it's just Heroes and my backlog of unwatched stuff for a while.
Right now I'm making my way through Pushing Daisies, which is bittersweet because it's both fabulous and CANCELLED. Being Human also started up a few weeks ago. The sampler pilot was awesome, so I'm looking forward to seeing how the second draft turned out (even minus two of the original three cast members). I suppose I could start watching the new season of Lost. But Lost is one of those shows where I'll watch a block of episodes all at once, and then not touch it again for months. So I'm not in a rush. I guess there's Dollhouse, too. I missed out on Joss' last TV show effort with Firefly, so I feel like I should be in the loop on THIS one. If only so I can join everyone in getting angry if/when it's prematurely cancelled.
