It was past midnight when Nino arrived home. He was dead exhausted, and was about to go straight to his bedroom when he noticed a bouquet of red roses resting on top of his table. Curious, Nino moved towards it and picked it up.
The bouquet of flowers was stunning - the reddest of roses all in full bloom, carefully arranged, wrapped and tied with a golden yellow ribbon. It was such a beauty that Nino couldn't help but wonder who gifted him with such. Nino soon found his answer in the small card perched in the middle of the flowers, an all too familiar handwriting decorating it.
To Ninomiya Kazunari-san,
I give you all these red roses as a symbol of my love. Among these you will find an artificial rose.
Kazu, I love you, and will continue to until the last of these roses dies.
Will you be with me till forever ends?
All my love,
Your Greatest Fan
Too stunned by such words, it took a while before it all sank in on Nino. He then felt a sudden rush of emotions so overwhelming he couldn't fight back the tears that started to flow out.
Nino was wiping away his tears when arms circled around his waist. He tensed for a moment until he recognized the familiar scent of the man, and turned around to look at him.
"Oh-chan," Nino whispered, a watery smile on his tear-stained face.
"I see you found my little gift," Ohno whispered back and gave the young man a chaste kiss on the lips.
"You're a total sap, you know that? Proposing to me with flowers and cheesy words."
Ohno pouted. "I thought the roses were pretty. And Mom only wrote what I couldn't say."
"Still sappy, you idiot. A simple 'Marry me' would do."
"I just wanted it to make it special for you."
Nino moved to cup Ohno's cheeks and caress them, a fond smile gracing his lips as he whispered: "You don't have to. Saying it is more than enough."
Nino then wrapped his arms around Ohno's shoulder and buried his face in the crook of the older man's neck. Ohno, in turn, tightened his hold on Nino.
For a few more minutes, they remained in each other's arms, basking in the presence and warmth that radiated from the other.
"Oh-chan?" Ohno hummed in response. Nino removed himself from Ohno, looked him in the eyes and smiled.
"Yes."
Ohno stilled for a moment and stared back at Nino. It took him another moment before Nino's words sank in.
Ohno's lips stretched into a wide grin as he grabbed Nino and held him close. Nino couldn't help but giggle at Ohno's sudden surge of excitement. Then, in one fluid motion, Ohno shifted their positions and leaned in to capture Nino's lips with his own.
It was unhurried and sweet - almost like the morning kisses they shared - and at that very moment, Nino felt all his doubts, fears and insecurities melt away. What was left was nothing short of pure happiness and love.
They broke apart seconds later, Ohno's lips still hovering over Nino's. He closed his eyes, and savored this moment he was sure he would never forget.
In the silence, Ohno whispered: "I love you."
Nino smiled, pecked Ohno's cheeks, and pulled him close.
"Me too."
