I have watched this clip, and the other Paul Potts clips several times, and I always feel the same fresh delight when I listen to this humble guy open up for the world.
I hate American Idol type shows, and have never watched a single minute of them. This is the British show "Britain's Got Talent" and Paul Potts sings Nessun Dorma.
No one sings opera at a pop talent contest, but he blew me away. I absolutely cried, and so did the judges. Not only that, but he won the entire competition. His diction isn't perfect, but the guy sells mobile phones....
he's amazing.
And he won the whole thing!
I've watched several videos of various world-class tenors singing Nessun Dorma, and they are all better than Paul Potts. Paul isn't even my favorite, But he has a quality I don't detect in any of them, something that makes him live in a way others don't.
I think, in part, we like Paul Potts' singing because we like HIM. He's the underdog, the Opera in a world of Rap, the fat in the world of Skinny, the bad teeth in the world of colgate smiles, the married guy in a world of sleep-arounds.
We like him, and we like his singing, and can look around his diction, a slightly weak low range, and other foibles that will probably be trained out of him.
I only hope he remains genuine and humble, and doesn't learn to begin wearing "Humble" like some outfit that he puts on before every interview.
This clip is only a couple minutes, I hope you'll watch.
