Comments: Can you tell I'm an English major? I love classics, and you probably notice that I've read every Shakespeare, Thomas Hardy, Jane Austen, and Alexandre Dumas on the list. I'm secure & happy in my nerdiness.
Atonement? If you haven't read anything by Ian McEwan, pick up one of his books. Amsterdam is a gem of a novel and quite short if you're looking at starting on him. Dark novels with twist endings--a bit like Thomas Hardy actually.
