Another's Sorrow Review

Review for Merlin 5x04: Another's Sorry. Spoilers obviously.

Overview

This was a pretty great episode in my opinion, a tense piece of drama that avoided the usual pitfalls that Merlin usually suffered from and actually created a sense of danger and had me on the edge of my seat at times.

When was the last time we saw an episode like this?

Episode Summary

Hey. Princess Mithian. Haven’t seen you in a while.  Not since you got chucked over for Gwen anyway.

One of the things I like about Merlin is that it has an on-going and recurring cast of characters. It helps create a sense that this is all happening in one universe. While this would not work in Doctor Who - for obvious reasons and with the obvious exception of villains, the Master and River - not even Robin Hood featured recurring non-regular characters to the extent that Merlin does.

This episode was actually quite scary at times. The fact that Morgana was able to pull off the illusion for some time made you wonder if Arthur was actually going to be killed. Of course he wasn’t, but there were still certain edge of the seat moments.

Let’s hope they keep up this standard of episode in the future.

Merlin

Merlin moved about in the background of this episode, though it was of course him that realised that they were about to walk into a trap - with the help of Princess Mithian that is. Though I will say for the most powerful magician ever he really shouldn’t have taken a beating like that. Even if he was caught off guard.

He seems to be sharing custody of Arthur’s conscience with Arthur, if the ending of this episode was anything to go by. He’s certainly sticking to the job of bringing about the perfect kingdom. Keep going Merlin. You’ll get there eventually.

Arthur (and Others)

Arthur. I appreciated you have a strong sense of loyalty to your friends, but COME ON!! You’re the king for pete’s sake. Can you please not just ride off into what just might be a trap when you don’t have an heir yet. Learn about a chain of command and start caring about a line of succession.

Nice to see Gaius featured heavily in this episode. We haven’t seen much of him recently - and he still needs a haircut - but it was good to see him and it was nice to be reminded that whatever he is now, back in the day he had some fairly powerful magic of his own.

Also nice to see that Gwen is thinking about the future of the kingdom, even if Arthur isn’t.

The Bad Guy

Odin was angry and desperate for revenge, but not stupid. When offered the chance to make peace, and possibly create a decent future for his kingdom, he took it. I wonder if we’ll ever see him again.

Morgana’s getting smart and powerful. This is not a good combination. She is defiantly staking her claim as the primary antagonist this season, which is a nice move away from the single episode villains of early seasons.

Conclusion.

Can more of the season be like this please? Thanks

Next Week: I don’t even know what’s going on here.
