I've just come back (well, on Tuesday night) from a 5 day trip to Canberra. This was my first opportunity to look around the city as I'd previously only been there briefly for a couple of work meetings. I have to say, it didn't really improve with closer acquaintance. It's such an odd layout, with clusters of office buildings separated by miles of bushland and goat farms. It's really odd for a national capital. Even in the heart of the CBD/shopping area I kind of felt like I was in, say, Rockingham.
The purpose of our visit was to catch up with a few friends, which we did very successfully. We went for a lovely walk around the lake and to the National Gallery, where we saw an exhibition on Lichtenstein. We also ate lots of fabulous meals, which the locals warned us would be expensive but actually cost a pittance compared to Perth equivalents. It's certainly a pleasant enough place to be if you have a particular reason to go there, it's just that the city itself is not justification enough.
