Watsonian vs Doylist?
The OTW news recently pointed to an article about Geek Nation Tours, a US-based tour group operator which specialises in fan-themed travel. This had me rather excited as we are currently planning a trip to North America and I love to travel with fannish associations in mind, so I had a look at some of their upcoming tours. One tour is for Supernatural fans. I'm not a fan of the show but I still thought the idea was really cool - I was imagining some kind of road trip through small town America. Sadly, the tour involves meeting some actors and touring a Hollywood studio. My first reaction was 'that's obviously not intended for hard-core fans' but then I started to question my assumption about how fans relate to their shows. Personally, I don't want to meet the actors, I want to *be* the characters. I'd be curious to know how other fans feel about this.
