Unfortunately you are very right that it's impossible to have a show run as long as Supernatural and not have retcons that don't quite work. I too was vexed by the appearance of Henry, seeming to abandon his family, and how that was not remotely telegraphed...and as you point out, the element of surprise to the characters equalling the surprise to the audience is key.

The only point I wish to offer an alternative look to is this one:
"What we saw in the collected Campbell family journals and resource archive, not to mention Bobby's collection of artifacts and books, Ash's considerable computer skills, and Ezra Moore's research support for Eliot Ness in Time After Time, demonstrated a fair bit of scholarship on the part of at least a subset of the most versatile hunters."

Ash and Bobby assembled their information after the MOL had vanished, giving Henry no understanding of how hunters continued after the MOL stopped assisting them. And I would suspect the Campbell clan had a little competition going with the MOL, not willingly sharing their data.

But how they could all get wiped out in one night? That just doesn't make any sense...sigh...
