At first Dean's lack of infection from Ed's blood bugged me too but now I think it might have been intentional. He also showed no sign of infection when Eve bit him. The other Starships she created had visible effects, like the 'veiny' thing spreading from where she touched them, and then became full-blown monsters in under half a minute. There was no veiny thing going on with Dean and it was a minute and 20 seconds before Cas healed him up. And at that point, he was still bleeding to death, not monstering out. I don't think he was infected either time.

Dean's immunity may be due to the phoenix ash he drank. Perhaps the stuff that can burn the Mother can also prevent her infection or slow its progression. They never did specify when he downed his weird, new mixed drink. If it was before leaving Bobby's, that could explain having no reaction to Ed's blood. Or (and I'm going out on a crazy speculation limb here) maybe the ash is a monster infection itself that can't be overridden by another. I mean, the one thing all the stories seem to have in common is that the new phoenix rises from the ashes of the old. Since when is it a good idea to go around ingesting parts of monsters -- especially the part of a monster that is said to beget the next one?

Ok, yeah, I know, that last bit is probably wrong. But we're fully expecting characters to die, walls to fall, and alliances to shift in the final episodes of the season, and one-of-a-kind-monster!Dean is one of the few ways that Show could blow some minds in the finale.

And it appears that I'm rapidly veering away from the point, so I'll just stop here.

Thanks for coming and sharing, and I'm sorry it's taken so long for me to respond!

I like your suggestion that the shot of phoenix-ash whiskey could have immunized Dean against the infection. Let's go with that! (And let's not consider the phoenix being reborn within someone who drank the ash - quick, Dean, drink lots of water and hit the bathroom ...! *grin*)
