Motorcycle Diaries of the Biker Babes, 2000-2006

Jun 28, 2008 19:06

Okay, this is another one of those real life posts, the ones that have nothing to do with Supernatural.  So, if you're just into my Supernatural writing, feel free to pass this one by. (And I promise faithfully to write about the boys Very Soon Now. Really. You think you're going into Winchester withdrawal? Me too. Why else do you think I'm suddenly so focused on family?)

Some of you who know me already know that from 2000 through 2006, I took my big vacation each year with my sister Terry and our Mom, riding on the back of my sister's Harley with Mom in the sidecar. On every one of our trips, I kept a journal of what we saw ("We saw the second-largest ball of twine in the continental U.S.. Awesome!" -- sorry, little Sam-moment there ...) and what we did, road-tripping across America in helmets and leathers on three wheels. I'm finally loading those trip journals into my LJ, and you're welcome to read them.

Mom was 76 when we started the big rides, and the trips stopped only when her Alzheimer's -- which made itself evident on the 2004 California trip -- advanced to the point where we couldn't keep her comfortable, happy, and safe on the bike. In 2007, we still did a bit on the bike when we could, just short day-trips in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois on her best days, because she loves the Harley and her sidecar throne. I don't think we'll get the chance to do another trip, but the ones we did were positively epic!

I've linked all of the journal entries to this message. The journals themselves are VERY long, so each trip is split into pieces, anywhere from two to four segments, with a link at the bottom of one section that will take you to the next.

I hope you enjoy the tales, and might choose to visit some of these places yourself, if you get the chance! See them through my eyes ...

Heh -- before Terry got the Harley, we still traveled together; we just did it on cruise ships (first, Hawaii; then the Scandinavian capitols of Europe, plus Berlin and St. Petersburg; then the last cruise of the season to Alaska and the run down to San Francisco; and finally, the Panama Canal) or big trips (Australia!!). These days, I'm more frugal and much less exciting ... *wry grin*
