you're so right! choices and what is done with them seems to be sort of central to the season plot.

Excellent meta, as usual! :)

I've always loved that the show stands firmly on the site of choices instead of destiny/fate. From Dean's refusal to go with the Reaper in IMTOD to Sam's choice to maintain his inherent goodness and not succumb to the YED's plans in AHBL I. Especially in Sam's case, I find the fact that even with being 'chosen' by the YED and supposedly life-altering blood rituals at his crib he still has to choose to be evil and isn't destined to be so, one of the most important messages of the show.

Wouldn’t it be a deadly kick if people who sold their souls to demons wound up bypassing whatever should happen to a human soul upon death, and instead became demons themselves when their human bodies died? That's a truly horrifying thought, although we at least know in John's case that his 'soul' survived and could be released from hell to find some kind of peace. And judging from all the spirits that visibly escaped from the devil's gate, I think he wasn't a singular case. Although that could be a matter of time in the end ( ... )

Excellent analysis. I have always believed choice to be the key element in moral judgements. There is such a tendency these days to try to place all the blame for evil actions on childhood trauma or even genetics. But not every person with a horrible childhood grows up to be a serial killer. And while I believe that some people--sociopaths, for example--are literally born evil, or at least with a greater capacity for evil, I don't believe that error of genetics to be a valid justification for not insisting that they take responsibility for the evil actions they commit ( ... )

Another great class, Professor! I don't have anything really intelligent to add, just a few random thoughts.

Wouldn’t it be a deadly kick if people who sold their souls to demons wound up bypassing whatever should happen to a human soul upon death, and instead became demons themselves when their human bodies died? That could truly be Hell, at least for a basically good soul. Which makes me even more worried for Dean & that damn deal. I think that would probably be (one of) Dean's worst nightmare(s). However, seeing as how Dean's never been possessed & the fact that he WILL get out of the deal (fingers crossed), I'm going to try not to think about that possibility. *fingers in ears* La la la...I can't hear you ( ... )

I have been fascinated by Gordon's character (mostly because Sterling K Brown plays him so well). I suspect that Gordon felt things very deeply, and the only way he could survive as a hunter was to shut off that little voice of doubt. Which is too be pitied, but I think we all agree Gordon became a monster long before he was turned into a vampire ( ... )
