Music Theory 101, anyone?

Since there hasn't been a lot of chatter in this community lately...

How useful would you find an SCA workshop on basic music theory?

I like to collaborate a LOT, but frequently end up doing so with musicians (most often vocalists) who don't have any formal training. So phrases like "is that a good key for you?" or "no, no, the song's in three, not four" or "let's try dropping this down a fifth" can garner a lot of blank looks, depending on who's at rehearsal.

Really, the sole advantages of knowing this stuff are:

  • To be more self-aware, so you can be more deliberate in making your musical contribution, and

  • To communicate more easily with other performers (in a group setting, it always helps to know you're both talking about the same damn thing, amirite?)

  • Anyway, I've long been thinking of putting together a packet for a class. Now might be a good time to experiment, as a good friend of mine has expressed the desire to learn this stuff in order to collaborate better.

    Does she have company, though?
