After then two older men finish getting ready, we go out to the back yard to take the picture. I realize that Anrui must’ve won that argument they were having when we first met them, about where to take the picture. If I remember correctly, Yamato wanted to take it on the beach while Anrui wanted it here. I chuckled to myself, figuring that Anrui probably wins a lot of their arguments.
Only a few feet from the deck, there is a three-legged contraption with a hunk of metal balanced on top of it. The contrast of the jet black, gangly figure in the lush, green garden startles me. At first, I thought it was a bug of some sort, but none of my companions seem jarred by it, so I proceed cautiously behind them.
Yamato walks directly over to the strange structure and I can feel all the hairs on my body prickle. “Yuuri,” I whisper, clutching his arm, “What is that thing?”
“Hmm?” Yuuri murmurs, following my gaze to the structure. “Oh, it’s just a camera. The metal box on the top is the camera and the three-legged stand is called a ‘tripod’. You know what a camera is, right?”
“The thing that makes fast paintings?” I ask.
He nods and smiles down at me. “The tripod is just used to hold it up.”
“Alright, I think I’m going to take a few versions of different sets of people. First I’ll take a few of Yuuri and Wolfram,” Yamato exclaims, toggling various parts of the metal device before looking back up at us.
He bends behind the box, looks into it for a moment, then stands and stares pensively at the scenery straight ahead of him. “Stand over there,” he commands, obviously distracted by the atmosphere in that area.
I can understand his distraction; he’s probably trying to imagine the best place for us to stand in order to make the composition of the picture as successful as possible.
We stand in the appointed place and Yuuri immediately gets rigid. “Relax Yuuri,” Yamato says, adjusting a few more things on the camera.
He approaches us, something excited and intense in his eyes. He positions our bodies with the deft dexterity of a master painter molding paint with his brush. Our final position consists of Yuuri standing behind me, his hands on my hips, and both our bodies facing the camera diagonally.
“We’ll start with this one!” he cries, trotting over to the camera and looking into it.
“3,2,1 and smile!”
I smile, but am not ready for the bright flash that emanates from the box. An attack? From where? Maybe the camera is really a bomb or trap?
I recoil, pushing Yuuri back before I start charging the metal death trap.
“Wolfram! What are you doing?” Anrui shouts, I see him start towards me in my peripheral vision but I’m too fast for him to stop.
I reach for my sword mid-run, realizing much to my chagrin that I don’t have it. I gnarl my teeth, but continue to charge, determined to at least get the dangerous item further away from everyone else.
I’m about to make a wild punch at the machine when Yamato steps in the way. “Wolfram, stop!” he shouts, grabbing my flying fist and intercepting my smaller body with his. He’s rather strong for a commoner, holding me away from the camera long enough to deviate my path.
“It’s trying to kill us! Let me destroy it!” I scream, glaring angrily at him.
Yuuri comes up behind me, grabbing my shoulders to keep me in one place. “Wolfram, it’s ok. It’s not going to hurt us.”
I refuse to believe him. It was such a sudden, bright, and dangerous looking flash. It must have been some sort of magic, maybe to blind us temporarily so the enemy can attack…even though I don’t know who the enemy could be…
“There was a flash! Was I the only one who saw it? It has to be some sort of majutsu!” I bark at Yuuri, rolling my shoulders violently to dislodge his grasp.
I move to attack again but Yamato grabs my arms again and Yuuri wraps his arms around my middle to, using a combined effort to constrain me.
Anrui jogs into my view, visibly anxious at my sudden (erratic looking) behavior. “No, it’s not…majutsu…it’s just the flash. It’s used to make the lighting good in the photograph. It’s not going to hurt you!” He says as calmly as he can muster, hands held up defensively, just incase I lash out against him.
Wait…lighting?
Slowly, a deep blush creeps over my entire face. Obviously, I had made a fool of myself. Of course the camera wasn’t dangerous, they wouldn’t be using it if it was! On top of all that, I almost broke something expensive looking.
“I’m sorry…I should really stop being so brash…” I mutter, trying to will away the extra heat in my face.
Yuuri pats me on the head and ruffles my hair like I was a juvenile boy who made a naïve mistake. “Its ok, we can’t expect you to acclimate so quickly. Also, being brash is just what you do.”
With an indignant snort, I smack his hand away from my head and walk back to the tree. I know I’m feeling irritated mostly because I embarrassed myself, but I still don’t like being treated like a fool.
“Can we just finish taking these pictures, please?” I ask, an edge of agitation apparent in my voice.
Yamato laughs a little, perhaps a little shaken from my sudden violent outburst, before he takes his post behind the camera again. “Alrighty, we’ll take a few more of the two of you. Ok, this time I want you to stand next to each other. Yuuri lay your arm over Wolfram’s shoulder. Good. Wolfram put your farthest hand on your hip…nice, ok.”
Awkwardly, Yuuri and I position ourselves as best we can. I can feel Yuuri trace circles on my shoulder. Small, barely noticeable touches, pressing into my skin through my clothes, virtually taking away all pressure in the atmosphere.
Since Yamato seems busied by the camera, I spare a moment to smile warmly over at him. He smiles back, a soft and barely toothy grin.
There is another bright flash and I have to remind myself not to freak out. Simultaneously, we turn to him.
“Why did you take the picture? We weren’t ready!” Yuuri whines.
“Are you kidding me? That was the best candid ever! You guys are so cute!” Yamato gushes as he peeks out from behind the camera.
I find myself blushing again and wondering if I have a fever or if it is just because of these ridiculous lunatics surround me.
