So, I truckled off to
The Ghetto last night to go and see
Zombina and the Skeletones, as suggested by
caveynik.
I got into Soho early-ish and so took a stumble around to what had changed. Oh boy, has Soho changed! Down by Oxford Circus has gone really all big chain, multinational wipe clean stores. I hardly recognised it. The Living Joke's Gestion Charging Con has hit that part of town badly! I was there at 9pm, three weeks before Chrimble, and there was hardly anybody about! No wonder they were happy that the million turned up for last weekend's stunt of closing off the roads to all traffic.
Still, I wandered around and ended up in
The Ben Crouch. I partook of a Sin and then wandered a bit more. My legs carried me along to
The Jack Horner, which is one of my favourite pubs in that area mainly for the atmosphere but also beacuse they serve real ales. A half of
London Pride was taken and waited out the time until I'd womble back to
The Astoria.
Had been sitting, cogitating, for about ten minutes and I get a call from
caveynik to say he was in the area. "Ten minutes", say I, finish the half and get down to meet him outside The Astoria. We were a bit early so ended up going for a pint in
The Royal George. So, Nik and I are chatting away and my phone buzzes. It was a call from my nan. She was a bit flustered because my mum had gone out to "the market" earlier and not come back. I do the ring around, and no reply from my mum. This is not good, thinks I. I make apologies and skidaddle, thinking to jump on a bus, hit a train and get back quick. Get on the bus, and my phone buzzes again. This time, it's my mum. Seems she didn't hear her phone as it was in her bag and she'd been down the
German market with some of her friends from college. That makes a lot of difference as I remember from my past experience of the German market in Birmingham, it would be quite easy to just sit at one of their tables and have a drink or two and the time would fly by.
So, I head back to The Ghetto. Get in, get beer, find
caveynik. Finally the moment arrives and Zombina plus Skeletones start their set. "Start" is a most appropriate word. The turned up on stage and BANG!.. straight into their first track. About the third track, Zombina did a bit of talking to the crowd and then WHOMP!... straight back into it! I really like the energy of their music. Their songs aren't too long (probably about 4 minutes max), they play well, they have some catchy tunes and they have a sort of buzz about them. Shame the sound down there was DIRE as it was hard to hear the words to the songs sometimes but they put on a great show. They even did a 90 second acapella song which was well received. I'd strongly suggest going to see them if you get the chance!
Sometime after that, I left and jumped on the bus to get back to mea casa. There were some twats on the bus who thought it was hysterically funny to amek the sound of sheep. All it made me think of was getting a can of gasoline, a lit match and making sure they didn't have BSE!
Out of it all I seem to have ended up with about four prestige passes for
Popstarz at The Ghetto. They get you in free PLUS a free drink. They're only valid until the Dec 23, but if anyone wants one/some give me a shout and I'll get them to you.
