This isn’t Poetry
when i am awaken in the middle of the night
[always at 3 am] by bad dreams or cats jumping
on me, i am comforted by visions of ghosts at
my bedside, staring down at my inactivity and
ridiculing me: that men can sleep and experience
the luxury of nightmares while thousands are
tortured by their government’s callousness, by
imposed creations or their own created devices
i wake up early even on weekend mornings
[always at 5:45 am] even hung over with a
forever persistent, annoying, bothersome and
haunting harassment of a need, some need to
do some thing, anything: read history, brush my
teeth, cut my nails, to do laundry, to write, to act
i apologize for this, if you’ve expected
something else, poetry; this isn’t poetry, this is
a call to action; this isn’t poetry, it’s a call to
be involved; this isn’t poetry, it’s a call to
organize; this isn’t poetry, it’s a call to join a
political party that is not from column a or b
this isn’t poetry, it’s a call to end the occupation
of rhetoric and repression of the american mind
this isn’t poetry, it’s a call to end the culture of
insipidness, numbness and deadness
this isn’t poetry, it’s a call to arms
