Because of the late cold, I've been able (been forced to) stagger the work on the mini-farm ( Read more... )

I bought organic purple and white carrots before at farmer's market and was really disappointed by the taste. I hope yours are more flavorsome. This was about 5 years ago, so maybe time and different flavor profiles have led to tastier varieties. I will definitely try them again in the future.

On the gardening front: You've been busy! You put me to shame; I haven't yet made the time to start tomatoes, corn, and okra. Here in Egypt, we are super late as our temps are now in the low-mid 90s.

Maybe this evening, when it cools down, I'll summon the energy to plant a few pots with the kids...

I assume you have a longer growing season than I do, and can still harvest corn or tomatoes in October or November?

August is the real harvest month here, with some things going through to September, but by October, we're back to a second crop of "cool weather" plants like greens, peas, and brassicas. Those need to grow quick, though.

I planted a mix of multicolor carrots last year--a mix from the seed company--and so the ones I ordered are the ones I liked the best from that mix (plus the black carrots, which weren't in the mix). The white ones were bland, but the purple and red were delicious. There are a lot of varieties of carrots.

Yeah, we can definitely harvest later. Our problem so far has been no lack of heat but of sun, seeing as how our balcony only had 3-4 hrs of sunlight. Now that we have flat with a garden, we hope to do a bit better, but still, apart from a communal area in the front, it doesn't look as if we are going to have any more sun that at the other place. :-< We'll see...

I am very late for where I am, in that I should have started the seedlings in February, indoors. Last year I couldn't get any energy together until well into May and wound up doing everything from store-bought seedlings.

I'm waaaay ahead of where I was last year. And I certainly couldn't imagine getting myself together in the 90° heat!

yeah, being almost 9 months pregnant doesn't help on the energy front either. :P

Wait, wait, you're doing this while days away from having a human squeeze out of you?

Planting my garden would be the last thing on my mind!

Well, *weeks* away. :P Have about 5 to go.

I did plant and toil, but I also sat down a lot and directed the work. Must have looked like the laziest, bossiest gardener ever to anyone peeking down into our garden. ;)
