PSA: Check your tires.

Was driving home on Sunday and stopped for gas. The attendant looked at my right front tire and said, "This tire looks low."

"Oh, it always does," I said. "The front tires always look squishy to me, but the guys at the garage assure me the pressure is right."

"No, I mean, it really looks low." He pulled out a pressure gauge. I hopped out and watched him test the tire. "Fifteen psi."

"Yeah, that's low."

We checked the door and found the correct inflation for my front tires is 30psi. The station had a free air pump, so I went over and filled up the tire. The left front also looked a little low, but it was 35psi (so my guys at the garage aren't wrong...but there's "looks low" and "is low").

What bugs me is I should have checked it earlier. I knew my gas mileage had dropped off after Christmas (I obsessively track my mileage) and hadn't improved after the oil change last month. Which means that when they changed my oil, they failed to note the low air in the tire! I've probably been driving around on a dangerous tire for at least two months.

Anyhow, the funny bit is that we were so distracted by the tire that we both failed to notice that the pump had cut off after putting in less than one gallon of gas. (This is an occasional issue with my model of car when using a high-speed pump.) I drove off down the highway, and after about a mile I glanced at the gas gauge and it was still at half a tank and not rising. Whoops!
