I'm beginning to think it's all the same very bad copyeditor.

It doesn't matter if the heroine actually does want to sleep with the "hero." Having him blackmail her into the sack still makes him a complete asshole.
Also also: I hereby declare that no author may set a romance novel in Scotland and have someone drown in a loch. I'm sure that real people do indeed drown in them, but the population of romance-novel Scots seem to be particularly bad swimmers.
Having someone get eaten by a leftover plesiosaur would be an acceptable loch-related death.
