To phone or not to phone?

Lately my venerable old clamshell phone has been getting twitchy. It's my first and only cell phone--I've had it 8 or nine years. It's so old it doesn't have a camera. (Which is handy sometimes, when going into places that have strict no-camera security policies.)

I have the cheapest possible plan from Verizon. My primary use of a phone is to make phone calls, and Verizon's plan includes unlimited nights, weekends, and in-network calls, which constitute about 90% of my cell time. I occasionally play a game (Snood) when I'm stuck waiting somewhere. I text very little, so I don't have a text plan.

I am facing a dilemma: what to replace it with? I'm pretty happy with Verizon. One thing about the Eastern Seaboard in general and New York in particular: it's Verizon territory.

So I have two options:

1. A Droid. This is the more expensive option (because in addition to getting the pricey phone, I would also get the pricey data plan and so on).

2. A cheap-ass phone (preferably another clamshell), and an iPod Touch to be bought later.

I suspect that if I had a phone that does more, I would quickly adapt to the added features and start using them. A phone has an advantage over the iPod that it doesn't need a wifi hotspot to get internet. The Droid, in fact, can be a wifi hotspot on its own.

Argh. Tech is great, but it's expensive.
