I'd also like to point out that if you are unemployed and qualify for food stamps and then get a really shitty job, it's possible for you to no longer be eligible for food stamps while also having to pay for child care, bus fare/gas, dry cleaning costs etc associated with a new job. In other words, it's possible to be less financially stable while working. And should you lose that job, you have to apply for food stamps all over again, and how likely are you to have money in the bank to cover groceries until you get benefits again?
Additionally, I continue to be baffled by people who think that food stamps are easy to get (in Chicago, it generally requires multiple applications and takes 3-6 months AT LEAST to get approved), and are a truly livable option. I cook from scratch, have a very usable kitchen, cook with dried beans and make soups and stuff a lot... and still would be hard pressed to buy groceries for a family of 3 using only food stamps. It's not like people can easily drop by their local welfare office, pick up a wad of cash, and live like kings on foie gras and organic free trade artisinal cheeses, you know?
