I had a number of good friends fade away from a private mailing list to FB and Twitter. Annoying, but if I want to keep in touch I have to check there.
I'm with you. I won't join Facebook because of the privacy issues, and a number of people I know getting viruses and worms from them. Ptooey on Facebook.
My siblings, father and lots of cousins are on FB. They are always telling me "you should join because so-and-so is trying to find you". Well, I'm not hiding anywhere. Google me. I've got a website with my own name in the URL. I've got an LJ. My employer is listed on my public LinkedIn profile. And, I've had the same phone number and address for almost 15 years. My parents have had the same phone and address for nearly 30 years. Ain't no one who really wants to find me going to be unable to find me just because I'm not on FB. (And, from what I've heard I'm in no hurry to recontact many of those people so diligently looking for me.)
I feel the same way about Twitter, MySpace, Ning and all the other social networking sites out there.
I like LJ because it's populated with clever, intelligent, interesting and erudite people (like you) who write long, thoughtful entries.
I'm on Facebook because it allows me to connect with the fun and interesting people with whom I grew up (but who aren't citizens of the Silicon World like me) and family. I gotta lotta family.
