The Stupid, It Does Burn

Aug 29, 2007 16:46

There's an inordinate amount of Stupid running loose in the internet lately.

It's official: not all opinions are created equal.
Opinions based on fact and research officially trump opinions based on magical thinking.
Opinions based on "what is easiest to implement" officially trump opinions based on "what is most convenient for me."
Opinions based on "this does the least harm" officially trump opinions based on "I want the world to revolve around me."

Those sort of ideas are not opinions. They are policy decisions. Opinions are things such as "I like bacon" or "I don't like purple." It is even a valid opinion to say "Clowns give me the creeps." It is not a valid opinion to say, "And therefore clowns should be outlawed/rounded up and relegated to a Clown Occupied Zone/be equipped with sirens to alert unsuspecting coulrophobics." I'm sorry you're afraid of clowns, but maybe you should consider that if you go to the circus, you might just see a clown.*

Along with the dollar I want every time a writer uses a cliche, I also want the magical power to smack people at a distance and cause the voices in their heads to say, "IT'S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT YOU, DIPSHIT. GET THE FUCK OVER YOURSELF."

*If you think clowns are a metaphor here, you'd be right.
