Spring

I was baffled the other day, wondering why on earth the road crew was moving snow from one side of the road to the other. There's a big rock retaining wall alongside our road, and the drifts were about half-way up to the top, and all the way out to the road. I thought it looked kind of cool, but they seemed to think they had to laboriously move it all, one bulldozer load at a time, to the other side of the road.

I think I figured out why, however. I think, maybe, they think it is going to be spring, and when it is spring, we will need that ditch for all the melting snow to send its water, running away and sinking in and making everything green! It could happen. I told my sister my theory, and she said, "Those fools!" She's feeling a bit daunted by this long winter. We got spoiled the last couple of years--we had two mostly no snow, mostly warmish winters in a row, and now normal Alaska winters feel like an affront.

I suppose it's good for us, to get used to how things are supposed to be. I really shouldn't be rooting for global warming, but in the winter, in Alaska, I can't help myself sometimes. Someday, maybe, I'll go somewhere warm.

I'm hopeful about spring. It's been sunny every day for I forget how long, and just right at freezing, which is nice because it allows for a little bit of melting each day, but not more than the sun can dry off. The ice on the road stays nicely packed, so we don't have ruts, and our lake hasn't started yet this year. I'm happy. Weather Underground says it's supposed to get well up into the 30's next week. I'm hoping it'll speed up the going away of snow, without getting entirely sloppy.

Did I log on just to do a weather update? No, I got a notice that my automatic payment didn't go through, and so if I wanted to keep my account, I had to log on and change my info. As long as I was logged on, and as long as I was paying for the place to write something, I figured I might as well take the time to write something.

It's strange, I haven't been using my journal atall recently, but when the notice came, I had no qualms about paying for another year. I'm still attached her at LJ, even if I'm absent most of the time. I wouldn't dream of letting it go... so I suppose I should do this more often, and start making good use of my investment.
