Don't do what I do people. Don't pay your bills on line and never open the paper copies. la la la
I kept wondering why on earth my Sears bill was creeping up. Sure I'm late every now and then but it was getting insane...how is it getting HIGHER if I'm paying more than the minimum I thought.
Well if you do open up a credit card bill these days it will just make you cry. #1 Don't be late if you can humanly afford not to be. My cards charge nearly $40 for the pleasure. #2 Be sure to look for hidden gems like the one I found on my Sears card this morning. "Account Care". I called and asked them what the hell that was and they said I signed up for it on a solicitation call. I said I remembered those calls and that I had said NO. So when I asked them to cancel the service and credit me the service rep pulls out this legal ju-jitsu and dances around for fifteen minutes. Finally I said "Are you refusing to cancel this service?"
"No I'm just trying to get you to reconsider keeping it for a lower rate."
"Ok you know what...I'm canceling the damned card then...I just won't eat out or buy anything fun for the next couple of months, transfer me to customer service."
I just paid off the card entirely and killed it. At 29.99 (let's just call it 30% shall we?) percent interest they are freaking leg breakers and not credit card companies these days anyway.
It's not the best timing in the world with a strike looming but we haven't gone out yet so here's hoping we have another paycheck coming before/if we go out.
There have been some interesting developments on the Hill lately regarding credit cards. I've been especially interested in what Elizabeth Warren has been doing with the COP (Congressional Oversight Panel) but what has been of special note is that no one has even suggested bringing back the usery laws.
