I just read that Daschel HIMSELF realized he forgot that he was getting a "gift" (the car and driver that was paid for by a friend) that he owed taxes on, and brought it to the attention of the IRS.
So if someone rents me a limo I guess I owe taxes on it!
The exception to this rule is spouses and family members. Spouse shave an unlimted gift allowance, ie all gifts are non-taxable and family members have a much higher gift total before it becomes taxable income.

But most people don't receive enough gifts in a single year to make it taxable.
