I think the reason there is so much focus on China in America is because the two economies are so intertwined, because China is becoming the "other" global superpower, and because China seems so foriegn (ie there are large cultural differences) to Americans. As my co-worker pointed out there's a lot more going on in Darfur (still) and yet Tibet has drawn so much attention, so quickly.

After thinking about it over the weekend, and in writing this, perhaps a sense of moral outrage isn't the appropriate tone to strike. After the last few years I feel America has given up a lot of moral high ground (or perhaps exposed the thin ledge it always stood on). In the end, it seems that if I had to play devil's advocate and take China's side, then what is one to do with a particularly violent uprising than quell it and try to restore order? Still, what is done in the name of the greater good can often be done in a better way.

Perhaps Aldous Huxley said it best, "It is a bit embarrassing to have been concerned with the human problem all one's life and find at the end that one has no more to offer by way of advice than "try to be a little kinder."
