She looked at me with worried eyes
Noticing my distraction again
And asked me simply, "is everything alright?"
I had to pause to think for a second
So simple a question
Belies the complex answer running in my head
How do you explain that your thinking the impossible
The forbidden fruit as seen by Adam and Eve
You know the consequences of your desired actions
But still you wish to partake
How do you say I am sorry but my heart is taken
It was gone before I met you
I put it away when I realized
That I was chasing what was denied
My proverbial forbidden fruit
So long I will wait to taste it
How long it will be denied is unknown
Perhaps one day the restriction will be lifted
Yet all of this ran through my mind was too complex
Too much to lay upon her plate.
So I answered in kind to her request,
Simple if not sincere,
"Everything is fine, just thinking."
And went on with the day as before
