Day of Silence

Apr 16, 2010 17:43

Breaking my unannounced semi-hiatus for something that inspired me...:) Today was the Day of Silence, a student organized movement to end anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) behavior at school. I participated in it myself because I sincerely believe that we should not discriminate against others merely on the basis of their sexual orientation. Many students have committed suicide because of anti-LGBT harassment from classmates. There is much evidence of these actions at my school: Many rude individuals call others "gay" as an insult. When classmates find out that someone is gay or lesbian, they immediately begin spreading horrible rumors and avoiding the person. This is a severe form of bullying and should not be tolerated. It is a jab at the founding principle that "all men are equal." Degrading others into silence is not the way to gain confidence or fit in. If you believe that one should treat others the way they want to be treated, please visit this website to support the movement. (Since this year's Day of Silence is over, you should keep it in mind for next year!)
