The Most commonly known phrase for what we know as Japanese Rope Bondage is “Nawa Shibari”. The Phrase uses the Japanese “Nawa” for a thread or cord and “Shibari” meaning to tie or bind. So the phrase means “to tie tightly with thread or rope”.
Shibari Involves the use of many ropes and a choice from hundreds of recognised knots. both of these contribute to the finished display and great care is taken during the construction. Shibari and it's knots have their roots in the traditional way of tying up captives or “hojojutsu”.
At last count there were just over 30 recognised japanese Rope bondage artists working in japan of these only a select few are known as Sensei or true masters of the art.
