There was no love between Castiel and Crowley. Some people have greatness thrust upon them while others have to crawl literally from the bowels of hell and grab it by the balls. And that’s exactly what he was going to do.
How could he resist the temptation of pulling on Castiel strings? He was gullible. It was too much fun and after all Castiel did make a deal with devil and that was him. Crowley knew he would soon get bored but the damage would be done. If it just happened to affect Castiel’s two pets, so much the better.
