Intelligent Squirrel??

The remains of Gustav started coming through the Chicago area last night.   We went to sleep to the patter of light rain.   About 3 am, we were both startled out of sleep by a loud WHUMP!

As there was no subsequent noise we decided to find out if a branch had fallen from our tree in the morning, there wouldn't be much we could do about it at night anyway.

Steve went out to find a giant pile of leaves and smaller branches on the hood of my mini van.  The van is not parked under any large overhanging boughs, though if a big enough branch fell it might be in jeapordy (it's a pretty old tree, was in the neigborhood when it was still farmland 60 years ago)

He reported that there was a very confused looking squirrel, hiding underneath his car.  It didn't appear to be full-grown.  We figure if it has a bad concussion may get eaten by Mr. Kitty or our local hawks.  The rain is probably working to its advantage at the moment.   If it recovers, and uses the incident as a learning experience to improve its nest building skills I figure it might be a future National Merit Scholar. ;)
