Characters. We Didn't Start The Fire 1-16 Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6
Ben's heart is nearly jumping out of his throat. He hasn't seen his dad in months and he's finally coming home. He's cutting it real close, Ellie's birthday is today. She had been crying earlier in the day, because she woke up on her 5th birthday and her dad wasn't there to surprise her, like she had thought he would. But Ben's mom told her that he was on his way and she calmed down and got happy again.
She gets dozens of presents from her mom and two from Ben. It doesn't take much to make the little girl happy. A couple of baby dolls and fake-make up can occupy her for hours. Ben got her a My Twin doll, even though he thinks it's scary; it's what she always wanted. And he also got her a mood ring and necklace set. She is convinced that the jewelry can really tell her mood.
"Ben, when's Caleb comin' over. You said he was comin' now. It's now and I don't see him. I don't even care if he didn't get me anything I just wanna see him."
Ben smiles at his little sister and starts to play with her hair. He loves how curly and dark it is- nothing like his hair. She got his dad's genes all the way.
"Soon, birthday girl. And I'm sure he got you a gift, so don't worry. But don't expect too much, okay? He doesn't really know what you like...I mean I gave him some ideas so, we'll see. Do you understand what I mean?"
Ellie looks up at her big brother with shiny eyes. "Of course I do, Benny."
Ben kisses her forehead and picks her up. She has on one of the new dresses Ben's mom bought her. It's green with white stripes and it fits her perfectly. She looks so adorable Ben can hardly believe it. He doesn't think he was this cute when he was 5. But he wasn't a girl and didn't have dresses to wear. So it's all right.
"Ellie don't ever stop being little okay? I don't want you to grow up."
His sister makes a face at him. "Benny I can't. I gotta grow big sometime. Who would want to be this short forever? I'd be...the littlest girl on the planet!"
Ben laughs a little and hugs Ellie. "I know I know. I was just saying."
When the doorbell rings the little girl flails around in her brother's arms. "Put me down it's Caleb! I wanna- I gotta answer the door first!"
Ben puts her down gently and she sprints to the door. She opens it with a gigantic smile on her face. "CALEB!" she opens her arms up to him. "Caleb it's my birthday today!"
Caleb grins and nods. "I know, sweetie. That's why your present is outside..."
"MOMMY CAN I GO OUTSIDE TO SEE MY GIFT?!"
Mrs. Keller's comes to the door, greeting Caleb with a pleasant hello. "Caleb you didn't have to get her anything, a card would have sufficed. But thank you, that was really nice of you."
Caleb sets the girl down and holds out the card. "I got her a card too, but the real gift is outside, I hope what I got her is okay. I mean, I wasn't sure what to get exactly- hey Ben," he says seeing Ben approach his front door. "..But I tried my best."
The four of them head outside to see a huge box that's wrapped in glittering pink paper with a huge sparkly bow on top.
"There's no way that fit in your Mustang..." Ben states pointing out the obvious, making his boyfriend giggle.
"Yeah, you're right. I took Corey's truck, so it could fit in the back, he has like 3 cars so it's no biggie," he says with a chuckle. Like it's nothing. Like it's completely normal for a teenager to have more than one car.
"You took your brother's 4X4 to transport my sisters gift because it is so big- what the heck is it?" Ben asks, very confused as to what it could be.
"Relax, It's not that big. It's medium sized I suppose. Well actually it is sort of big. But it's not anything too big, I hope. You guys can keep in the backyard if you want...wherever you'd like to keep it. I just hope she likes it.."
In seconds the paper is torn to shreds and Ellie is a squealing mess. "OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY...GOSH!" she starts to jump around and yell out some more. She tears open and box and starts to remove all the restraints around her new present.
"Caleb...you did not get my sister a
Barbie Jeep." The older boy frowns. "I..did. I'm sorry I should have asked before I got her this...I know it's not exactly 100% definitely s-a-f-e but-"
Mrs. Kellers politely interrupts him. "Caleb, no it's...it's great. She loves it. It's just too much. You really shouldn't have. I...I couldn't upset my daughter by asking you to take it back but seriously, Caleb that was way too generous of you. Next time just stick with the card," she says with a smirk. "Ellie sweetheart, what do you say?"
"Thank you Caleb! It's perfect! Can it really move?" She asks in awe, sitting inside the Jeep. "It's like a real car...it should- I mean I wouldn't be upset if it don't. I just-"
Caleb giggles and sits in it with the girl, even though he barely fits. "Of course it really moves. It has a battery that your mommy needs to charge for a while. But after that it will be good to go- as long as your mommy says it's okay and maybe your big brother will watch you so you don't get any boo boos?"
Ellie looks towards Ben. "Will you Ben? When it's ready to move will you watch me ride on it?" How could anyone say no to such a cute little voice like that?
Ben nods and outstretches his hand to his boyfriend. He can't believe that Caleb spent so much money on his baby sister for her birthday. Those Jeeps aren't cheap. He thought Caleb would go overboard, but not this overboard. Caleb is everything that Ben has ever dreamed of. He's everything and more. He is literally too good to be true. And he couldn't be more thankful.
Caleb takes his boyfriend's hand and climbs out of the toy Jeep.
"I'll charge it for you later baby girl, we should go inside now and wait for daddy. He'll be home very soon."
"Okay momma. I can't wait to show daddy my Barbie Jeep! I can take him for rides. Oh wait- I can't daddy is too big. But that's okay daddy can watch me too right?"
Mrs. Kellers picks up her daughter and holds her tight, carrying her into their home. "Yes Ellie, daddy can watch you all you want."
Ben and Caleb stay outside for a few more moments before heading inside. Caleb can't wait for summer to be in full bloom. He only has a month left of high school, and it feels so good. He can't wait to turn 18 and he knows Corey can't either. Corey probably doesn't want to, but Caleb wants to go club-hopping and such. Caleb would so have a blast. Corey on the other hand, not so much. He likes to dance and he's good at it, but if a guy came anywhere near him he'd probably knock a couple teeth out. He'd make sure he brought Kevin so he could make everyone jealous.
"So are you nervous? About your dad coming home? You seem a little on edge. It's normal, I bet. It must be hard...I don't mean to sound like I know but- I'm just trying to read your face you know?" Caleb asks his boyfriend who has a worried look on his face.
"Yeah, actually. I don't know why. I can't really explain it. I know what he looks like, yet I'm curious to see if he looks the same. I'm not sure if he'll have a beard, a new tattoo, or look bigger than before he left. I'm not sure. As much as I know my dad...he's always surprising me. In a good way I guess. I- he's amazing, Caleb. He's one of the most incredible guys ever, and not just because he's my dad, because he's a hero. When I was little that's all my mom would tell me. 'Your daddy's a hero, you know that right?' she'd say to me all the time. And now I get it- he really is. Ellie doesn't really understand it now, but someday she will. I know it."
Caleb holds Ben in his arms and kisses the side of his head. "I can't wait to meet him. He sounds wonderful."
Caleb spends the next half hour trying to calm Ben's nerves, and when his dad finally arrives, it's like the atmosphere completely changes. Caleb can feel the love between his boyfriend's family. He doesn't feel at all awkward when they all group hug- for five minutes straight. They are so connected it's almost unreal.
Mr. Kellers holds onto his wife and nuzzles his face into her long blond hair, probably missing the way it smelled. He is a big man, much bigger than Ben will ever be- but that is because he's forced to be this way. All that training and hard work...
"Ben, god I missed you so much. It feels so good to be home, son. I thanked god for this family, praying that I'd be able to come home to you all. And Ellie, my baby angel, how old are you today, darling? 10 now?"
Ellie frantically shakes her head. "NO silly. 5!" She says holding up one of her hands to show him.
Ellie gets picked up for the millionth time today, by the strong arms of her father. "Yes, that's right. 5 years old. I knew it. You got so big! You're growing up so fast, you look just like your mommy. Such a beautiful little girl, Ellie. You'll always be my little angel. Can you give daddy a big hug, the biggest hug in the world?"
Ellie squeezes her dad like it'll be the last time she ever does.
Caleb could cry at this. He never had anything like this growing up. He never had a real dad...never had a real mom. He always had Corey, but he never had real parents when he was little. Neither of them did. They were deprived of moments like this until they were 10, which is not an age to be lovey dovey with your parents. They missed out on a life-altering aspect of childhood.
"And Ben, who is this?" Mr. Kellers asks with his daughter still in his arms.
Caleb smiles. "My friend Caleb. Dad Caleb, Caleb, dad." And as soon as Ben finishes his sentence; his boyfriend frowns.
"No he's not he's-" Ben quickly hushes his sister, giving her a look that tells her to remain silent.
"My best friend, haha. Yeah. We got really close in these past months."
Ben totally went back on his word. He said he was going to introduce him to his father as his boyfriend. And he didn't. But Caleb puts up a front- something that Corey would do, and offers his hand.
"You can call me Pete, Caleb. Nice to meet you." He says, maneuvering Ellie so he can shake his hand.
Ben doesn't even notice that he's hurt his boyfriend, he's too busy drowning in his dads presence, and that's understandable. And wanting his gayness to be a secret is understandable as well...but they talked about this and Caleb thought they were on the same page. But they clearly are not.
"You too. I've actually got to get going. I- just remembered. I have something I have to do." Ben looks so puzzled. "See you later birthday girl, bye Ben, bye Mrs. Kellers."
He hopes that later on in the day, or even tomorrow Ben will realize that Caleb is upset with him. He's going to let Ben spend time with his dad and whole family for a while now- he deserves it, it's been months since he's seen the super nice man that walked in the doorway a few minutes ago.
He's not only leaving because of Ben, but because he's slightly jealous of what his boyfriends' family has. He feels a little bit like a jerk for leaving, but it's most likely what Ben wants. He would be too caught up in the moment to worry about paying attention to Caleb, so it's better that he leave now and let them catch up with each other. It's not exactly his place to share this moment with them anyway. If he and Ben had been dating for years and actually knew Mr. Kellers, then that would even be different. But it's not and he's leaving; hopefully somewhat respectfully. He wouldn't ever want to come off as rude to Ben or his family.

Corey kisses his boyfriend softly on his neck, sucking lightly to hopefully leave his mark. He loves how he can make Kevin moan with such ease. It is not difficult to please Kevin, especially since Kevin is so attracted to the twin.
Kevin starts to unbutton his shirt until Corey's hands replace his own, doing the job for him. The younger boy smiles into their kiss, pushing the fabric off of his boyfriend.
Corey climbs on top of his boyfriend, but is startled off of him when his door opens.
"Sorry! Sorry...I'll come back...later-" Caleb mutters, trying to hide his post-crying voice from his brother. He should have knocked. At least they weren't actually in the act...out of all the opportunities Caleb and Corey had to walk in on each other, neither of them ever did.
"Wait, Cale, is everything okay?" Corey asks, surprisingly not angry at him for being a complete cock-block.
"Uhh yeah. Look, it's okay I know I probably ruined the moment but you can get it back. I'll go get dinner somewhere. Just continue what you were doing..."
Kevin sees the concern in Corey's eyes, so he beings to put his shirt back on. He wouldn't ever put sex before something that was actually important, and judging by the way Corey looks Kevin sees that something is up with Caleb.
"Cale, you have been crying, I can tell. What happened? Did Ben's dad flip out that his sons a fag and insult you? Cause I don't care how many times he's been to Afghanistan I'll kick his ass-"
Caleb shakes his head and sighs. "No, he didn't have a chance to. Ben played the friend card. Even his sister tried to out him but he shut her up. God, why am I so stupid? I should have known he wouldn't tell his dad. Why did I even expect this to go well?"
Kevin is not sure it's his place, but Corey seems to respond to everything with violence, which isn't the answer this time. So he decides to give his input, trying to put himself in Caleb and Ben's shoes.
"I- I'm not taking sides or anything but...I'm sure he's just scared. He'll tell him when the time is right. I- sort of know what he's going through. I didn't want to tell my dad either, and when he found out he- well Corey knows this already. He wouldn't speak to me for what seemed like forever. It was bad but..he came around. So, I think Ben has the same fear I did. But I'm sure he'll come clean about it soon."
Corey rubs Kevin's hand with the pad of his thumb. He has such an amazing boyfriend.
Caleb nods. "I guess you're right. But it just sucks. I asked him if he was sure he wanted to tell him. And he said yeah but as soon as it came down to it he backed out. I stood there and looked like an idiot. If I would have known I wouldn't be this mad. You know?"
Kevin grips Corey's hand and scoots closer to the edge of the bed. "Yeah, I know. That was wrong of him. But just give him time and try to be understanding. Corey told me Ben's dad is in the Army...that kind of makes it ten times worse. Poor boy is probably terrified. He must think his dad will make him go to boot camp or something if he finds out."
Caleb bites down on his lip. He didn't really think of that. He was kind of being selfish. He didn't really stop to think what must have been going through Ben's mind. He was only thinking about himself, which is completely out of character for Caleb. Maybe he should stop hanging out with his brother so often, they are beginning to switch personalities.
"Keep him," Caleb says to his brother. "Don't do anything to fuck this up, because I like Kevin." He looks towards his brothers boyfriend. "Thanks for putting everything into perspective for me."
Kevin smiles huge and giggles a bit. "No problem I just...didn't want my boyfriend to get his ass handed to him by an army man. He's scared shitless of MY dad, I wonder what would happen if-"
Corey gets fake-angry. "Oh shut your mouth, Kev, I am not scared of your dad. Cale, don't listen to him he's full of lies!"
Caleb should get a medal for setting these two up, because he did a damn good job. They are practically made for each other. Just like he and Ben are made for each other.
He just hopes that Ben will muster up some courage and tell his dad eventually...how could they have a relationship if his dad never knew? What would happen when his dad was home for good and expects Ben to have a girlfriend? Fiance? Wife? Kids? What would happen then?

Grace hears her cell phone ring across the room, but she's feeling too lazy to get it. She tries to ignore it, but when it rings over and over again she thinks it's Trevor, who is calling because his car probably broke down and he needs her to get his mom or dad to help him.
She trucks her butt the two feet needed to get her phone and answers it. "Hello?"
"So I hear you're knocked up. Congratulations. I'm so glad I found out from your fucking Facebook. How you're so excited for the baby and how Trevor is going to make such a great father. But tell me the fucking truth, Grace. Is it mine?"
Grace's eyes grow wide and she feels her heart race rapidly. She tries to force out a word but she can't. She breathes in and out, trying to focus.
"I- I don't know what you're talking a-about-"
"Don't fucking bullshit me, Grace. I'm sick of you giving me line after line telling me one thing and then doing another. That's why we ended our little 'affair.' Because I was tired of your lies. But what could I expect from you? I was the 'other' guy, and us other guys always get the short end of the stick, don't we? I just wanna know Grace. Could this baby be mine or not? I think I deserve to know."
Grace wipes her face to clear her tears. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"I DESERVE THE TRUTH GRACE!" Is all she hears before she hangs up.
This is exactly what she was afraid of.
