random thoughts on scent:
i am apparently very sensitive to smells, which is something i never really noticed until talking about it with other people. whenever i eat mexican food, i am convinced that i smell like an enchilada when i leave the restaurant. everyone tells me i am nuts, and that i do not, in fact, smell like an enchilada.
the thing that really strikes me the most is the way i remember smells. after doing extensive research (read: doing a quick google search), i read that while scent does not necessarily trigger more accurate memories than other senses, it does trigger a more emotional response. this totally makes sense when i think about my weird scent connections.
i've used the same perfume since freshman year in college, and i put it on just about every day. i first started using the scent during the MEP - i would stand on my pile of clothes in front of the dresser/mirror in my room in warren, put on my pin, and spray the perfume. to this day, whenever i use the perfume, i immediately picture myself freshman year doing the same thing. it totally brings me back. this is a memory i don't mind, so i rather enjoy it.
after mike and i broke up, i stayed with woods and chris for a month and took the 96 bus every day. that bus leaves from the terminal inside harvard station, and now, every time i smell the bus exhaust in the station, it's an immediate transport back to those days.
there's even a certain smell in the food court in the garage in harvard sq. that is particular to winter. maybe it's because they turn on the heat, but it's definitely different than the way it smells in the summer. this one is a pretty recent development, and it's very odd - i can almost feel myself sitting around during my lunch break last winter. i even remember the books i was reading and the kind of food i ate (cold cut sandwiches, diet dr. peppers, and those rice cake chips).
