if thom yorke ran naked along wall street shouting 'down with the economy! down with the economy!' chris martin would probably do the same a year later.
i'm sorry, i just think chris martin rips off thom yorke so much that it might be funny but it isnt.
Um, hello. Sorry, but who are you? I have a hunch but you tell me anyway :>
To be honest I don't know much about Radiohead, though my friend's been trying to get me to listen to them. Have heard like, um, two songs xD which are pretty neat (Sorry, my ability to describe music is very primitive and uncultured) but Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway as 2/3s of The Weird Sisters (in Goblet of Fire) are teh cool :D
yeah actually the fact that jonny greenwood and phil selway are in the weird sisters is the only reason why i seriously want to watch the movie. otherwise i think it's gonna suck. dumbledore is SUCH a big disappointment seriously. WHAT were the scriptwriters thinking. btw i think ill also buy the soundtrack, if only for the three songs that jonny greenwood and jarvis cocker wrote for it.
Okay to be frank I can't really empathise with you much because I have been waiting for this movie for ages and eons and light years. I suppose it comes from having a totally rabid HP fan for a sister :>
(And then I also have other silly fangirling reasons, but I'll spare you those. Heh.)
Hm, about Dumbledore. I don't think Michael Gambon will ever really replace Richard Harris, bless his soul :( . Once Gambondude came along they sort of decided to turn Dumbledore into this eccentric hippie guy. He doesn't have that class that Richard Harris brought to the role, definitely. But then Harris was a stage actor. But Dumbledore isn't really the focus of the books and films and all so I guess I'm okay with it
( ... )
actually i was a little disappointed when patrick doyle took over from john williams cos i rather liked the prisoner of azkaban soundtrack :$
and i didn't really like richard harris, bless his soul, as dumbledore either. from the very first scene he looked and sounded like he was going to faint or something. it's a pity that ian mckellen acted as gandalf because i think he'd have been perfect for dumbledore but had he acted as dumbledore, everyone would've just said Warner Bros were trying to rip off LOTR because the movies were so successful or something. blah.
for me, i really like the HP books for the characterization and not so much for the plot itself, so its a real letdown when the characters in the movie are so uncharacteristic of those in the book. it's like as if the people who write the scripts for the movies just don't get the books or something. it's especially disappointing when dumbledore, in my opinion the best-characterized intelligent-and-wise-bearded-old-men in any book that i've read, is such a dope in the movie(s). dumbledore in the movies does no justice whatsoever to how beautifully jk rowling's written about him. like how he gets so angry in the trailer when harry's name comes out of the goblet, how he looks so uncharacteristically stupidly worried when harry picks the hungarian horntail before the first task, and how he hurls harry against a wall and shouts at him demanding to know whether he'd put his name in the goblet. and i also read this interview where daniel radcliffe said he'd worked very hard at the dancing bit because he wanted to be really good at it. in the

3b) Let me divert a bit off-topic here since you were talking about characters and all. Would it be safe to assume your favourite character in the books is Dumbledore, then? Or at least the one who intrigues you a lot. Like I said above, perhaps I’ve never accorded Dumbledore the attention he deserves. What intrigues you most about him? If you want to take up this line of discussion I shall happily blabber on about which characters I like best too :D
And no worries, your theory about having lower expectations and being less disappointed makes sense. I'm rather an eternal optimist so I always tend to have high hopes though =P Also, sorry for the ramblyness and going off-topic. I sometimes think all these things in my head so it’s nice to put them down somewhere and see what someone else thinks about them. Thinking keeps the fangirling from completely consuming me. :)
Whew, was that a long comment! Heh this discussion went from Chris Martin to Radiohead to The Weird Sisters to Dumbledore to full-fledged HP. Cool.

lol :D yeah ive seen dumbledore is not dead, and yeah its interesting :D and ive never really been bothered about the podcasts much.. tried to read an excerpt but found it 'hopelessly mundane', to be honest. it'd probably be more entertaining to actually listen to them i guess, but that would demand too much of me patience-wise

yeah i know what you mean about PS to PoA.. but it'll be sad, after book six, to read about dumbledore apparating into privet drive, using his put-outer, chuckling at cat-mcgonagall and muttering that he 'should have known' wouldnt it.
and no i did geog because i was sure i wouldn't manage to even scrape a pass for lit or history like i did for geog over the past two years... the marks i got for lit and history in sec 2 were bad enough, though for lit, i never really understood why i got so low, which to me was a pretty clear indicator that i shouldn't take it. lit, that is. it was fun though.
Re: Zomg my comment was too long xPbangendedscootNovember 18 2005, 10:30:24 UTC
Ah, I see. Yeah Lit. is definitely fun. I love it :)
Am completely hopeless at Geography though. In Sec 2 I studied quite a fair bit for the end-of-year because I knew I'd get awful marks otherwise and then I got 49.5% and my kind teacher looked through my paper again and found some place where he could slip me half a mark more. xS That made it clear enough that Geog and I were not meant to be. The projects were pretty fun though.

ah haha :) im sorry but truly i thought GoF was very very bad.. even though im not very disappointed, thats only because i didnt expect it to be any better than how bad i thought it was.. i think that their interpretation of the book is so terribly and unforgivably(i just have to use the word :P) poor. that's not because they didn't take it the way i visualized it or something, that's perfectly fine with me.. plot-wise, you have to acknowledge that the film-makers dont have that much space and stuff so removing scenes is alright, but even as far as that's concerned, i think they bungled. like.. there were some scenes that were so cinematic they were fake.. the first task's a good example of that. i thought harry and the dragon flying all around the school was unnecessary. but more than that, im really disappointed with the characters. hermione was just plain irritating, shouting and squealing all over the place and getting all scared and stuff.. they didn't show how she helped him prepare for anything, which is a big deal because it

Ah well, of course you're entitled to your opinion :) Which is much more well-substantiated than mine, I must say.
*sigh* I enjoyed the film but when it comes to thinking of reasons why it's hard to explain. I think it's cos' I am quite a big HP fan (much more so than most of my friends who have more mature/sophisticated tastes) and I've been looking forward to the film for pretty long so I was just really glad to get the chance to finally watch it. Also, I liked the funny bits (all the jokes that more serious viewers might find irritating or just plain stupid) because I could relate to them somehow and they made me laugh. Am a sucker for humour, like I said before. Is that a bad thing, I wonder.
Bah am I weird or what. xS
Okay let me go think. Will attempt to formulate some sort of coherent response if my brain cells will cooperate pfft -_-"

heh :) i think that at its core, hp is both mature and sophisticated. however, not being very well-read, i suppose im not in much of a position to say that. anyway, my favourite part of the movie was the scene with the weird sisters - jonny greenwood with face paint :D its funny when you think of people with generally serious personas doing stupid things like that :D pity it didnt last more than a few seconds though.
Re: Zomg my comment was too long xPbangendedscootNovember 20 2005, 04:23:32 UTC
[irrelevant rant] Bah this is the fifth response I am typing to your comment because the computer keeps conking out on me. I swear, this is some stupid conspiracy. [/irrelevant rant]Ah, yes. Anyway. Personally I do feel that the HP books are pretty deep and deal with some important issues, thereby making it pretty “mature and sophisticated”. I mean, even JKR has said with the release of each progressively-darker book that she won’t shy away from addressing issues that younger readers might not be able to fully grasp. So it’s not just a children’s book, that I agree with
