Hi everyone,
this is a first for me. Upon request by the lovely
spikesredqueen, I'm making a tutorial post for these two icons:
I usually don't make tutorials cause I just work on the moment and it's not like I have very defined techniques. But I'll give this a try :)
It's all under the cut ;)
Oh, I use Topaz Lab and my Photoshop (7.0)is in Italian and I searched the corresponding English terms that I didn't know but if something doesn't sound right or it's not correct please tell me :)
I'm not that good at explaining myself so if you have any kind of question ask away.
Tutorial #1
Step 1: I just cropped and resized the image into a 100x100 canvas.
Step 2: Levels -> New Adjustment Layer-> Curves
These are the settings: RGB, input 134, output 182.
Merge all layers.
Step 3: Duplicate the base -> Filter -> Gaussian Blur (14.0). Set it to Soft Light. Merge the layers.
Step 4: I used Topaz Labs now. Set the icon to Crisp Style and then I used these settings:
-strength: 0
treshold: 0.50
radius:8
accent:2
radius: 1.03
sharpness: 1.17
texture: 0.20
boost: 1.19
size: 2.00
Step 5: I used the Black and White fill gradient, the angle is 34. Set the layer to soft light.
Step 6: Duplicate the base -> Filter -> Gaussian Blur (14.0). Set it to Soft Light. Merge the layers.
Step 7: With the eraser tool (soft brush 7, opacity 48, flow 59) I erased some darkness on the right cause I wanted to her hair to stand out a bit more.
Step 8: Duplicate the base -> Filter -> Gaussian Blur (14.0). Set it to Soft Light. Erase some darkness on the right and under her chin. Merge all the layers.
Step 9: Set the icon to Screen, opacity 48.
Step 10: Go to Hue/Saturation and set the red to +11 and the yellow to -28
Step 11: Use the gradient map. Set the right to 60A026 and the left to 295C0E. Set the map to soft light, the angle is 26.
Step 12: Go to Saturation and set the green to -36
Step 13: Levels -> New Adjustment Layer-> Curves
These are the settings: RGB, input 156, output 173.
Merge all layers.
Step 14: I wanted to make her eyes slightly green so I went to quick mask (under the panel when you choose the colors), click on it, go to brush and select the space (in this case the eyes) you wanna color, then click on the little mask on the left. Go to select and then invert.
Step 15: New Layer color fill with 295C0E. Set it to soft light, opacity 62.
Step 16: Brightness/Contrast. Set the contrast to +2.
Step 17: Levels -> New Adjustment Layer-> Curves
These are the settings: RGB, input 178, output 187.
Merge all layers and you're done.
Your icon should look like this:
(I'm sorry I couldn't post the different stages of the icon but I had some problems with photoshop).
Tutorial #2
Crop and resize the icon in a 100x100 canvas.
Step 1: Levels -> New Adjustment Layer-> Curves
These are the settings: RGB, input 144, output 207.
Merge all layers.
Step 2: Duplicate the base, set it to screen, opacity 51.
Step 3: Use a fill black and white gradient and set it to color. This makes the icon black and white and it's nice to work with.
It should look like this:
Step 4: Duplicate the base -> Filter -> Gaussian Blur (14.0). Set it to Soft Light.
Step 5: Levels -> New Adjustment Layer-> Curves
These are the settings: RGB, input 174, output 195.
Merge all layers.
Step 6: Use a gradient map black and white, set it to soft light, opacity 51.
Step 7: Levels -> New Adjustment Layer-> Curves
These are the settings: RGB, input 157, output 170.
Merge all layers.
Step 8: Topaz Labs. Set it to Curly Smooth and the rest of the settings:
strength: 0
treshold: 0.21
radius:8
accent:0
radius 1.76
sharpness 1.99
texture 0.00
boost: 1.00
size 2.00
Step 9:
Levels-> New adjustment layer-> Levels.
Input: 0 , 1.19, 255
Output: 0 , 255
Step 10: Duplicate the base -> Filter -> Gaussian Blur (14.0). Set it to Soft Light.
Step 11: REPEAT Step 10 and set the opacity to 81.
Step 12: Hue/Contrast. Set the hue to +9 and the contrast to +6.
Step 13: Duplicate the base -> Filter -> Gaussian Blur (14.0). Set it to Soft Light.
Step 14: REPEAT step 13.
Step 15: Hue/Contrast. Set the contrast to +3.
And you're done.
Your icon should look like this:
