>> Who decided that for 25k-30k people the rest of the 99.5% of the city should sacrifice something?

While I'm yet to make up my mind on this whole issue, I see that twisting of facts is disturbing here. Who thought that twisting facts was restricted to politicians only :)

25-30k people travel *everyday* == roughly 1 million a year. That means around 15% population would be affected by this in a year. I'm sure not everyone travels by flight everyday :-) So, saying 99.5% of city wouldn't benefit from this is not right.

OTOH, BMTC runs 10 or so buses every 30 minutes just to the airport. That is, roughly around 500 bus (~10*24*2) trips every day for the airport alone. This number will only go up with population increase. I'd be glad to take out these 500+ bus trips out of the roads everyday, reducing congestion and not to mention pollution. Each trip is roughly 1.5 hours, so a total 750 hours of burning (and hence carbon dioxide emission) per day.

In the long run, there is no doubt in my mind, that this line should be functional. Implementation details, sure we could do it better...

Just my 2 paisa :)

let me again stress- no one is saying there should not be safe travel options to the airport.the argument is that a high speed rail link is not desirable.

you are multiplying 25k into 365 assuming different people travel each day and one bangalorean travels just once a year by flight. should we call this twisting of facts? you can dig up any database you want and nowhere will you get evidence to support your claim that 15%(around 10 lakh) of bangalore's population uses the airport.

Now i'll tell you my facts/arguments were not 'twisted'. Sure more than 30k people might use the airport throught the course of the year, but how many times would they do that? so there is a very low percentage who goes to the airport regularly(maybe 30k?) and a slightly higher percentage who uses the airport once atleast a year(maybe 2 lakh at the most?). Now given that you already have vayu vajra, cabs to the airport and six lanes roads; if you want to consider one more travel option you would consider people who use it regularly right - and that would be around 0.5% (of 70 lakh, bangalore's population). I am sure that, if asked lakhs of others in Bangalore would say that they do not want the government to spend 3000 crores on a high speed rail link to the airport.

you also argue about the road spaces occupied by 500 buses. what about the HSRL - will it run on air? Have you considered how much PERMANENT road space it needs for its supporting infrastructure?
