Hello! My name is Francesca and I am very excited to be forcing my views on music upon you guys every Monday this month :D If you have any questions/requests related to this post then please feel free to ask in the comments. Apologies to people on my friend's list as you will have seen this before. I am terrible with introductions so I will let the following quotation speak for itself:

"The greatest band in the world is up next. Ladies and gentlemen - Saves The Day"
- Ben Jorgensen, Armor For Sleep.

They say humans completely shed their skin every seven years, and thus their entire beings are essentially born anew. If thats true, Saves The Day who've been playing for close to 10 years and are still only in their early 20s are well into their second life.
-STD's myspace page

Saves The Day was formed in New Jersey in 1997 by Chris Conley, David Soloway and some other guys who are no longer in the band. The current line up is completed with Manuel Carrero and Durijah Lang, both also of the band Glassjaw, and there is a 'former members' list as long as my arm. They've only had the same line up for two consecutive albums but as David and Chris are the main creative influences it doesn't really show in my opinion.

Currently, they look like this

l - r: Manuel, David, Chris, Durijah

Chris has Crohn's Disease.

"I have a stomach disorder called Crohn's disease and it was getting really bad when we were getting ready to tour with Weezer. I had to take steroids, which disturbs your emotional state and balance; your equilibrium is thrown off and it makes the lows lower.
Chris Conley, musicemissions.com

which may well explain a lot of the thought process that goes in to some of the songs, Chron's can be pretty debilitating.

STD released their first album, Can't Slow Down, in 1998 when they were all still in high school and followed it up with the EP I'm Sorry I'm Leaving a year later. At this point the band consisted of Chris, David, Ted Alexander, Eben D'Amico, and Bryan Newman and also in 1999 they released Through Being Cool.

1. All-Star Me
2. You Vandal
3. Shoulder To The Wheel
4. Rocks Tonic Juice Magic
5. Holly Hox, Forget Me Nots
6. Third Engine
7. My Sweet Fracture
8. The Vast Spoils Of America (From The Badlands Through The Ocean)
9. The Last Lie I Told
10. Do You Know What I Love The Most?
11. Through Being Cool

This album is perfect. It's around thirty minutes long, that's half an hour of your life. Please download it and listen to it. Musically it's loud and fast and the average song length is about two and a half minutes. Lyrically it is angry and violent (you can definitely see that this album had a an influence of Pete Wentz's lyrics on Take This To Your Grave).
Except from My Sweet Fracture:

Could you tell me the next time that you're choking?
'Cause I'll rush right over
to shove some dirt right down your throat

The album title is taken from a Jawbreaker song, Unlisted Track, from the album Dear You:

Everyone tells me they're crazy
Well crazy people aren't so fucking boring
Wake me when your through being cool, cause I'm snoring

If you haven't heard of Jawbreaker you need to go out right now and buy all their CDs. They're a punk rock band from California and your favourite band wouldn't exist without them.

In 2001 the band released their third studio album, Stay What You Are.

Track listing:

1. At Your Funeral
2. See You
3. Cars and Calories
4. Certain Tragedy
5. Jukebox Breakdown
6. Freakish
7. As Your Ghost Takes Flight
8. Nightingale
9. All I'm Loosing Is Me
10. This Is Not An Exit
11. Firefly

While I don't think this album is technically as good as Through Being Cool it is by far my favourite. Definitely worth a listen - Freakish and At Your Funeral in particular.

Here ends what is commonly referred to as "old Saves The Day". Two members of the band left (Chris took over guitar duties, which is why there are now only four members of STD as opposed to five), they signed to a major, Chris started listening to The Beatles a lot the band drastically changed their sound and released In Reverie in 2001. I don't dislike this album. It's a lot more mellow and Chris's voice changed noticeably but it's a much more mature album than anything STD had released previous.

Nothing much happened for a while - 2004 saw the release of Ups and Downs: Early Recordings and B-Sides which was dedicated to Sean McGarth, former bassist (I think he left during the writing of Through Being Cool) who died after a two year battle with intestinal cancer the same year.

In 2006 they came out with Sound The Alarm.

1. Head for the Hills
2. The End
3. Shattered
4. Eulogy
5. Dying Day
6. 34
7. Say You'll Never Leave
8. Diseased
9. Don't Know Why
10. Sound the Alarm
11. Bones
12. Delusional
13. Hell Is Here

This album has a lot more in common with Through Being Cool than it does with In Reverie and as such a lot of people see it as a return to form. Like I said, while I don't dislike In Reverie at all it does stick out like a sore thumb in the STD discography.

Anyway, Sound The Alarm was the first part of a three album concept, which continued in 2007 with Under The Boards (which, according to Chris is like The Empire Strikes Back due to its transitional nature). As an album I find it a little jarring at times, emotionally it's all over the place which may have something to do with the fact that several of the songs were written quite a while ago, sometime between In Reverie and Sound The Alarm I believe. Nevertheless, it's a fairly enjoyable record.

The third part of this concept is yet to be released - I've no idea of the release date but it's going to be called Daybreak.

Sound The Alarm is an expression of discontent. Under the Boards is reflection and remorse. Daybreak is acceptance.

Firstly, as I said before, half the band are in Glassjaw as well

Former member Eben D'Amico used to be in Humble Beginnings (Gabe Saporta's band pre-Midtown) and Yearly (who recorded a split EP with The Rookie Lot whose members went on to be in Brand New (Jesse Lacey, Garrett Tierney, Brian Lane), The Movielife (Brandon Reilly) and Crime In Stereo (Alex Dunne).

Former member (yes, this is something of a theme with Saves The day) Pete Parada now drums for The Offspring and was, very briefly, in Alkaline Trio.

Through Being Cool was the song that Patrick Stump sang at his audition for Fall Out Boy

Pete Wentz mentioned them in an old q&a

Q: Pete, whats your take on Jersey?... oh and whos your favorite band ever to come out of jersey?
A: i love new jersey and jersey girls have cute accents. favorite jersey bands in order: bon jovi springsteen lifetime old savestheday my chemical romance the early november new saves the day midtown

Max Bemis (Say Anything) often mentions that Saves The Day were his favourite band growing up and that Chris is his favourite lyricist. If you listen to any of the old, out of print sayanything albums you can definitely see what a huge influence STD had on Max. Chris is a guest vocalist on Say Anything - In Defense Of The Genre (along with everyone else ever, apparently).

And finally, Max, Say Anything's drummer, Coby, Chris and Dave are in a band called Two Tongues together. There's one song up on their Myspace page and a full length album apparently due soon.

Up next week: The Movielife and associated acts - if there's anything you especially want to hear about then by all means drop me a note in the comments. See you next week!
