Story Time Sunday: Things have Changed for me

Jul 27, 2008 22:50

So guys this is my last rec post...I've really enjoyed the posts this month; and I hope you guys have enjoyed it too.

I love this fandom. The fiction/other fanworks I come across constantly astound me with their talent and heart. I enjoy the sheer variety of fiction represented in this fandom. I really love the stories that make me think. I love finishing a story and going, ' Oh, I never really thought of that..'
For my last rec post, I want to highlight fic that have made me pause and think about my beliefs and stances on topics.

You Only See What I Let You See -- (PG-13) by
frk_werewolf
PATD, MCR. (Spencer/Jon, Spencer + Gerard friendship); FtM Transgender Issues. This fic features transgendered Spencer and it handles the character beautifully.

Spencer doesn't exactly remember his very first conversation with Ryan; he was way too young of course. But he does remember, distinctly, telling Ryan at the so-called tender age of eight that he was going to be a boy when he grew up.

"But...you're a girl," Ryan said, eyeing Spencer's pink shirt with a vague sense of confusion.

"Maybe now I am, but God got it wrong," Spencer insisted. He was sure of this.

Told You It's Hard to Breathe -- (NC-17) by

PATD. (Spencer/Haley, Spencer/Jon); Crossdressing. What I love about this fic is how it handles cross-dressing. I remember commenting how this could have easily been gimmicky; but this story completely shows Spencer from the beginning as he gets more comfortable with himself. The relationships between all of the guys in PATD are amazing. *There be rimming in this fic*

He smiles at his reflection to see it smile back, reaches out and touches it because the person in the reflection doesn't seem to mind that his chest is just a touch too jiggly for a boy's or that his hands are starting to be too big for his body. The camisole is just a touch too tight, sort of uncomfortable the more he breathes.

But he feels all right in his skin, in the camisole made from space age fabric, until he remembers that he's wearing something that belongs to his mom, and his stomach turns because he doesn't know what it's supposed to mean.

This is a Public Announcement (And You’re the Only One Who Knows) -- (PG-13?) by

PATD. (Brendon centric, Brendon/Jon sort of). This fic conveyed the confusion of coming to terms with homosexuality so well.

Brendon grins at a new boy sitting in front of him at morning prayer, from a family who's just moved here from Salt Lake City. The kid has sandy blond hair that Brendon wants to touch to see if it's as soft as it looks. The kid grins back, looking over his shoulder at Brendon, away, and back again. Brendon feels himself blush, and he knows then, in an instant, that he's different. He's 12.

Love: the Package Deal -- (NC-17)  by

MCR. (Frank/Gerard, Gerard/Lyn-z, Frank/Gerard/Lyn-z, implied Frank/Gerard/Lyn-z, Jamia). This is one the first fics that showed polyamory to me. All the relationships are drawn so well and everyone feels so real.

Jamia’s always had a different understanding about how relationships worked. She’d been in a few relationships before she and Frank had gotten together. She lived with a couple - a man and a woman - for about a year, and she dated this one guy on and off who was also dating a few other people. He’s heard Jamia correct people about the difference between polyamory and open relationships, but the idea of how it all works still escapes him.

Undocumented -- (PG-13) by
azurejay
FOB. (Patrick centric) This story features FtM transgendered Patrick. It was one of the first fics I had read dealing with the subject.

"Tell me the truth," Pete says. "Just do that, that's all."

made me that much stronger -- (R) by

The Used. Genderswap. (Dan/Jepha). Kink, D/s. I love Jepha's characterization here. This fic deals with what it means to be 'feminine'  and 'strong' so well here.

Jepha’s always been strong. She’s always been hard because that’s what you have to be when you grow up a girl on an Army base, when you’re a girl playing in a band, when you’re on the road 300 days a year with a cabal of boys and men who don’t always have your best interests in mind.

You learn to hold your own in the face of men who won’t.

Not a Pretty Girl -- (PG-13) by
idyll
MCR. Genderswap. (Bob centric). This universe is made of all things excellent. This entire universe deals with being a woman in a male-dominated world so well. The story begins with Bob as a sound tech and follows her through 'Famous Last Words'.  The link takes you to the masterlist with the stories posted in chronological order.

Being a female sound tech in the scene fucking sucks at first. No, really, it does. For a lot of reasons.

Just Frankie -- (PG-15) by lisa roquin
MCR. Gender issues/identity. I don't know really how to describe this fic. Frankie's struggle in this is done so well. I remember just coming away from it and just saying 'oh'. The band in this is awesome--especially the Way Brothers. There is an eventual pairing (Frank/Matt C.). Jamia and Frankie's mom are perfect in this too. This entire series is perfect.

For Frankie Iero, whose mother was the only person in the world who got away with Frances Antonia without getting a death glare, Frank was really a natural progression. Frankie Iero loved music, wanted nothing more than to play the guitar in a band and damn it that's what she was going to do.

The thing was, Frankie was cute and tiny and no one was going to take a little pixie serious, not even going to listen unless she blew half the band or some fucking thing, not for the music she wanted to play.

Une Femme n'est pas Un Homme -- (NC-17) by
fallingfortruth and [superspleen]
MCR. Transgender. MtF. (Frank/Gee, het) This is the first in a terrific series featuring the relationship of Frank and Mikey's sister, Gee. In this Gee is transgendered. I adore this entire series.

She chews on her lower lip worriedly for a moment then stops, takes a frustrated little breath and tries to explain. "I- I used to be... him." She can't say the name. It's hard to even think it, without getting a little ill. "But now I'm me. I'm a girl," I think I am. I feel like I am. That has to be good enough, "but, um. I'm not..." Her cheeks pink up, again, as she sort of waves vaguely in the direction of her body. "You know. Um. A girl everywhere?"

Kick it Back -- (R) by

PATD. Besides the pairing ( which I adore!), I love how the author handles the aftermath of being outed and Spencer's struggle with his sexuality. The entire band is awesome in this.

“My mother has refused my advice to not Google me. And both of my brothers called to check in. You have to promise not to punch anyone if they call you ‘the little woman’ the next time they see you.” Spencer turns his head to bite at Jon’s stomach. “I thought of telling them that you usually top, but that’s a little too much information.”

So this is my last post. Seriously, if you guys have any recs--please link in the comments!

It's been sweet.
*Can't wait for next month's reccer!*
