Midtown Monday!

Jul 22, 2008 03:21

Yay, it's still Monday in some parts of the world! Like Hawaii! Go Hawaii!

SO.

Anyone who knows me probably also knows that Gabe Saporta is basically my favorite human being to ever exist. I'm not exaggerating. It's pretty sad. HOWEVER. Despite my massive love for Cobra Starship, all of my Gabe-love does not stem from there. A good portion of it actually stems from a little band called Midtown.

Gabe Saporta (Vocals/Bass), Tyler Rann (Guitar/Vocals), Rob Hitt (Drums), Heath Saraceno (Guitar/Vocals)

According to Wikipedia: "Formed in November, 1998 by three Rutgers University students, Midtown soon became a quartet. The band took advantage of the fertile New Jersey punk scene to develop a sound that combined elements of emo and punk rock and began recording shortly after their formation."

I have two things to say about this:

a) COLLEGE!FIC, C'MON.
b) EMO!GABE ♥

But I'm not here to wax philosophical about the awesomely incestuous turn-of-the-century Jersey scene and how everyone should WRITE FIC ABOUT IT ALWAYS (ahem), I am here to talk about awesome, awesome music.

Midtown's first release was the Sacrifice of Life EP in 1999.

Tracklist:
1. Direction
2. The Easy Way Out
3. Sacrifice of Life
4. Living in Spite
5. Come On

download

Which was followed quickly by their first full-length, Save The World, Lose The Girl, released in 2000.

Tracklist:
1. Just Rock & Roll
2. Direction
3. Recluse
4. Another Boy
5. Let Go
6. No Place Feels Like Home
7. Such A Person
8. We Bring Us Down
9. Knew It All Along
10. Come On
11. Resting Sounds
12. Frayed Ends

download

STW,LTG is raw, but not in a bad way. It's definitely no Evening Out With Your Girlfriend (oooh buuuuuurn). "Just Rock & Roll" was their first single and is a great track, and "Frayed Ends" is one of my favorite Midtown songs. It's a fun record, a band just starting out and finding their sound, and listening to it you can totally hear how they become the band that records...

Their 2002 album, Living Well Is The Best Revenge.

Tracklist:
1. Become What You Hate
2. Still Trying
3. Get It Together
4. Like A Movie
5. There's No Going Back
6. Perfect
7. You Should Know
8. One Last Time
9. A Faulty Foundation
10. In The Songs
11. Find Comfort In Yourself

download

Oh, Living Well. It's a record that pounds in your ears, aggressive, nonstop, air-drumming head-banging pop-punk. It's one of my favorite records of all time to just throw on and rock out to. It's infectious, especially if you're like me and like ~angry music. Also, there's "In The Songs", which is basically a love song to the Jersey scene (WRITE FIC).

After Living Well came Forget What You Know.

Tracklist:
1. Armageddon
2. To Our Savior
3. Give It Up
4. Is It Me? Is It True?
5. God Is Dead
6. Whole New World
7. Empty Like The Ocean
8. Nothing Is Ever What It Seems
9. The Tragedy Of the Human Condition
10. Waiting For The News
11. Until It Kills
12. Hey Baby, Don't You Know That We're All Whores
13. Help Me Sleep
14. Manhattan
15. So Long As We Keep Our Bodies Numb We're Safe

download

Forget What You Know is pretty unarguably Midtown's best - fitting, since it's also their last. (WEEP.) Written without a record label, produced by Butch Walker, this is not your typical pop-punk record. It's minor keys and relentless energy: tight, dark, and melodic. There's a fucking piano interlude, okay, I am such a sucker for piano. Also, if you know Cobra!Gabe but not Midtown!Gabe, this album is pretty mind-boggling for how dark it is. I basically love it.

According to the Midtown MySpace Blog, Gabe spent a month in the summer of 2005 alone in a cabin in the Catskills writing music. He apparently "wrote some sick songs" and became a pro lumberjack.

I have two things to say about this:

a) ICU STEALIN IDEAS RYAN ROSS
b) What happened to these songs REALLY I WANT TO KNOW.

So the next time someone sees Gabe, ask him about the ~lost Midtown songs. I mean, I'd do it myself, but I don't get to see him again until the fall and also I'm pretty sure his tech thinks I'm stalking him (I'M NOT STALKING YOU HANSEL I SWEAR :/ WE'RE JUST ALWAYS IN THE SAME PLACE), so yeah.

Anyway, ~MOAR MIDTOWN INFO~ can be found at:

midtownrock.com
myspace.com/midtown

The MySpace blog is pretty entertaining, I recommend it.

Midtown music videos, live videos, and interviews can be found on this YouTube channel! Watch them! THEY'RE ALL SO YOUNG AND PRECIOUS.

Also, usually I'm all about BUY THE ALBUM, but Gabe doesn't give a fuck if you download his music, so have at it.

In conclusion:

"In my old band, we all would always show each other our cocks, you know? Like, our cocks were always out. It wasn't even a homosexual thing. It was just like a bunch of good old boys showing their dicks around."
--Gabe Saporta

_typingmonkey_: tell people to write gabe/mikey
_typingmonkey_: and if they can't they should write tyler/gabe
wishpaper: mostly i'm just saying that midtown fic needs to exist
_typingmonkey_: a universal truth
