The auction has closed! (A bit early, I know, but I'm leaving for the weekend in a couple of hours.)
Thank you all so much for volunteering your bids, pimpage, skills, and general good vibes to this little project. We've raised $190 for hurricane relief!
And the biggest thanks, of course, go to
bookworm_myrtle,
ezagaaikwe, and
dawnydiesel, who won

Likewise, I'd be willing to take exact yarn/color/pattern requests, but I'd also be willing to take a request like, "one of those fuzzy shiny boa-looking scarves," or, "wool, narrow, ribbed, dark blue." Then I could hunt down some pattern possibilities online, and the winning bidder could either choose or leave it up to me. I'd also be willing to buy a pattern, if the bidder had a copyrighted-for-sale one in mind.
Perhaps the easiest place if someone wanted to specify an exact yarn in my case would be something I could get at WEBS. JoAnn's or Michael's would work too, (although my local Michael's has a limited yarn selection).
One other thing... if people wanted to give the scarf as a gift, I'd be glad to include a card that said something like, "This scarf was made in exchange for a donation to the Red Cross [or other charity] for their Hurricane Katrina efforts." In addition to the Red Cross and the charities on the Alternet list, I'd also be happy to crochet for donations to charities like Noah's Wish and the Humane Society.
Thank you for organizing this!

I'll add your offer to the main entry. And I love the card idea. I think that'll really help to bring people in, too.
Wheeeee! ::twirls you::

How do I do this? Do I start bidding here? If so, $50. Something pretty in warm colors: corals, peachy-pinks, golds. Or a pretty green, or a mixture of blue and green. I have fake red hair.
Not too fuzzy, either. It gets in my eyes. So cheap yarn! Yay! No mohair of angora. Itchy.

Looks like you'll win it, too -- you're only bidder #2.
How would you feel about a variegated homespun, like Lion's Homespun? It's an acrylic-polyester blend and quite soft, so it shouldn't itch you or get in your eyes. And it's a bit thicker than your standard worsted-weight, so it usually works up a bit better for scarves. It comes in a bazillion colors, so if you see one there you like, let me know! :)

I would maybe pick whatever would match your winter coat, but it's up to you. If you see a color in another brand, that's fine too. :)

I'm wondering if I should do something similar, rather than the Great Christmas Earring Giveaway...? What do you think?

Just out of curiosity, what does it cost you to make a pair of earrings? If you sold them for, like, $5-8, I'd bet people would snap them up.
It's a thought, anyway. Some people are probably going to be getting scarves from me for Christmas, donation or no. I still like to make presents around the holidays. :)

I think you're right about waiting until closer to the holidays.
