I've got some inner conflict going on here about what TV to buy for my dorm room this year.

First off -- I'm wavering between a 13" and a 19". A 13" would probably be okay for a small dorm room this year, but in an apartment next year or after college, I might find it too small. The 13" would cost somewhat less, and my pinchpenny frugal spirit ( Read more... )

Stumbling in here from my friendfriends list - and I still have my Toshiba tv that I purchased in 1988 and it is still going strong- it was my college tv - and those $130 have very much paid off. Heh. Also, just want to say I love your nic - I was a band (concert, jazz and marching) plus orchstra geek for a lot of years. Not playing now, but I heart band geeks. :) Wishing you luck with your purchase. If you can afford it, my experience says go for the Toshiba. :)

Hey, nice to meet you! And thanks for the advice -- that's what I like to hear, a TV going strong after seventeen years. Because I'm definitely the type to keep a TV for seventeen years. :)

I'd say go for the Toshiba, and definitely the 19-inch. The one I have is a 13-inch, and I usually end up watching DVDs and stuff on the computer just because my monitor is bigger.

Good point -- I can definitely see that happening. Plus, a friend of mine at school is in a studio apartment now with a cavernous living room, and I had to squint when we watched a movie on her 13" from across the room. If that happened to me, no one would ever come to visit me, and then I would die friendless and alone, with my 93 cats.

We have a Toshiba, and it's been great. The brand has a quality reputation, and I think it's better to spend a little more on something that will last you. And of course the 19". :) Seriously, though, you'll be glad down the line, I think. (This from the girl who bought a 54" Toshiba HDTV-capable, then ended up selling it a year later for less than half the cost. But this is a totally different situation, so I'm still recommending the larger one.)

Of course, it all depends on the return policy/warranty where you're purchasing it, too.

Good luck! :)

Holy shit, 54"?? What on earth would you need a JumboTron for?

Thanks for the advice. :)

i wouldn't buy anything that has the name broksonic, as in broke sonic perhaps? It operates by use of a broken sonic boom, or you go broke trying to repair it and then sonic boom yourself to death. Either way its bad news for you. I'd stay away from German based tv's, i've had a lot of problems with them. So if any of them are German, stay away. what type of tv's are these though? Tube, LCD, plasma?

Hmm ... I don't think any of these have anything to do with German technology, or with the speed of sound, so I'm pretty sure I'm safe there. :)

These are just your standard tube TVs, although it looks like the Toshiba has some fancier technology involved. I move too much and am just too clumsy to own anything expensive. :P
