Hmm ... maybe you just need to practice. ;) When I first started in fandom (at a very tender age), I didn't get it. But after a while, when I was able to give it a shot without giggling ... it turned out to be fabulous.

Most of my enjoyment of pr0n is picturing myself in the midst. With slash, where am I? A mouse in the corner? I like Spara because I most closely resemble AB and I can put myself in her place in my imaginings. With gay naked cowboys, there's no ROOM for me!

Heheh ... I guess it's the foreign that interests me. By the time I started reading slash, I'd read so much het that it was getting kinda ... well, boring. Not all het bores me, and I suppose I was just in a rut with the quality of what I was reading, but I think especially with popular pairings like Spuffy, they tend to become somewhat formulaic. It was refreshing to see something pushing the boundaries, violating taboos, engaging in forbidden activities. I guess that's kind of a kink of mine. ;)
As for recs, I would definitely point you toward the Spander collection at All About Spike -- there's a multitude of great stuff there, and Spander is pretty much my slashy OTP in the Jossverse (and also the first one that really pulled me in). Modus Vivendi by wiseacress is pretty much an uncontested fandom favorite, and if you want something funny, I'm rather partial to Male Bond-age by beamer242, if anything because I had so much fun goofing off online with her while she was writing it
