Scholarship Stupidity

As most people that know me are aware, my bitter feud with the USPS usually prevents any good mail from making its way to me. It's due to this enmity that I was surprised for more reasons than just the obvious when I discovered that today's mail contained a $500 check from Rutgers in my name. My marvel at my enemy's sloppiness quickly paved the way for confusion. I had just received money—from my school. I considered the possibility that, overnight, I somehow traversed the inter-dimensional void, waking up in a parallel universe where everything is ass-backwards. In this universe, schools send you money to not attend. Where, then, were my checks from all the other schools I wasn't currently enrolled in? As I mused over this notion, my mind kept focusing on the amount on the check. "$500." There was something about that figure...

It took a few logic leaps, but now I think I have an idea as to what happened. Every semester, I get $500 from the Nets & Devils Foundation; they automagically apply the credit to my student balance a month or two after classes start. Since it was a scholarship, I wondered once why it takes them so long to give me my money; I came to the conclusion that they were a bunch of lazy fucks. I'm clearly no better, since I didn't bother telling them that I wasn't going to be attending school this semester. What I think happened is that they sent the money in to Rutgers their usual 2 months into the semester, Rutgers (from whom I also neglected to acquire my conge) saw that I didn't owe any money and cut me a check for the credited amount.

The scholarship isn't that amazing — $500 a semester for 4 years — but it's still something. The caveat is that due to some partnership crap they've got going, it's only active so long as I attend Rutgers-Newark. Basically, if I transfer anywhere else, I'm supposed to lose the scholarship. Instead, because I was an inconsiderate asshole and didn't bother telling anyone anything, I'm going to keep receiving the money — in cash.

I have a feeling that when this eventually gets discovered a few months/years down the line, they're gonna want it back. Well too fucking bad! It's mine now.
