Going To The Pictures

The other day I went to the movies, in particular Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Which is an entirely amusing film, I can recommend it heartily to my mainland brethren. And it's actually showing now, so go already.

The theater itself was Odeon Guildford, and save for some typically British signage, it could've been a multiplex anywhere in the Netherlands or even the US. Ticket counter, place to get munchies, hallways to the theaters themselves.

The prices were as steep as ever, £4.05/€4.65/$6.44 for a cappuccino and a muffin, and £3.75/€4.30/$5.96 for a small popcorn, but eh. I wasn't expecting anything different.

However, upon purchasing my movie ticket, I was given the to me startling choice whether I wanted regular seating or for a mere single pound sterling extra, premier seating. Obviously, having never encountered such a thing, I immediately opted for it and paid £10.65/€12.20/$16.93.

As it turns out, in the UK, most of the larger multiplexes have such a system. At a small additional fee, you can get a larger seat and those larger seats tend to be conveniently placed in the middle of the room, or if the cinema is large enough, they have an entirely separate premier theater where all chairs are large. And may even come with a little table to put your drink on.

.. I wonder if a system like that would work in the Netherlands.
