Title: At the End of All Things
Author: bandearg_rois
Warnings: ... don't think I have any besides spoilers for RotK, which I shouldn't be spoiling for anyone that will read this.
Summary: At the Harbor, the End of All Things, Frodo says goodbye for the last time.
Disclaimer: LotR belongs to the Estate of J.R.R. Tolkien, as well as the companies involved in its production into film history. I don't even really own the movies, I just borrow the characters every once in awhile to play with, though I usually only do what they beg to be done.

"It is time, Frodo," Gandalf said, and Frodo gave an internal sigh of relief. He could no longer stay, not with the injuries he'd accrued and the sorrow that now weighed his heart, no matter how much he wished to chase it hence, to be rid of it and stay among his friends, his family.

"What does he mean?" Sam asked, even though Frodo could tell that he knew, understood what was happening despite the lack of forewarning. He sighed and found the words he had been searching for, since Galadriel had given him that look of veiled mischief and promise. Promise to heal, to really live, in a way he had not done for so long.

"We set out to save the Shire, Sam. And it has been saved. But not for me," Frodo said, willing Sam to understand that he had bided as long as he could, to make sure that Sam would be alright. Despite the end of their agreement some years before, ended perhaps even as the two lay dying on the side of Mt. Doom, Frodo still felt that Sam was the only one he could love, no matter what happened on the other side of the sea. But Sam had Rosie, and their babies, and it was time for Frodo to leave this world; there was nothing more he could do here, and he couldn't rest as he truly needed, not with the reminders of what had happened staring him in the face. He looked into Sam's eyes, hoping to be understood, and he knew from the tears that gathered there that he had been, even if Sam would still protest.

"You don't mean that," Sam said, shaking his head. "You can't leave."  Frodo pulled the book from its hiding place in his coat, and presented it to his friend.

"The last pages are for you, Sam," he said, meaning much more than he said. Sam took the book, tears streaming down his face, as Frodo said his goodbyes to Merry and Pippin, the best friends a Hobbit could have. Once he turned back to Sam, the book was held tightly in one hand, and Sam looked like he was already gone, not standing in front of him, saying goodbye. The embrace they shared carried far more than just two friends parting, and for a moment, Frodo allowed himself to reminisce, to wish for a moment that things had gone differently, that he and Sam could have been together. But Sam had Rosie, and it was the life that Sam had always wished for; he didn't begrudge his happiness in the least.

He could feel Sam's thoughts, almost as if they were his own, the sorrow at their parting, the absolute surety that nothing would ever be as good as it had been , if only for a little while, and he allowed himself to mourn for that as well, for the passing of what was into what now could never be. If only for a moment, they were Frodo and Sam, belonging to each other, with nothing separating them. The moment ended all too soon as Gandalf nodded from the corner of his eye, and he pulled away, kissing Sam one last time, in remembrance and love, before he joined his friend in stepping onto the ship, to join his uncle in the last adventure either of them would have.

So the dialogue was from the movie, even though the kiss at the end wasn't. I take liberties with my fiction, didn't you know that?

This was thought up at 3 in the morning, even though I didn't write it until just now. Watching LotR for Karl certainly brings up old ships in the process, as is evidenced by this little bit of lunacy.

Thanks for reading!
